“Many markets are back online, and the rest are in the process of coming back online,” Rice added. “This issue is not directly caused by cyber security incidents; rather, it is caused by a third-party provider during a configuration change.”

According to a CNN reports, a cashier at one of the stores in New York revealed that the store’s system went down around 1 a.m. and was back in operation at 5 a.m.

Many users flocked to Facebook, Instagram and X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to voice their displeasure and frustration over the outage.

“We’ve received word that Mcdonald’s IT outage was caused by Russian hackers taking revenge on the fast food chain pulling out of their country in 2022,” one user joked on X. “They’ve finally exhausted their Big Mac sauce reserves. , and they held the company hostage for 1000 liters of the precious seasoning.”

The reason for the disruption has not yet been revealed.

German Workers Comment on the Crisis

On Reddit, users reported the outage on the Technology sub-Reddit, leading one netizen to wonder why they didn’t just use pen and paper. “The Achilles heel of modern life finally dawns on people when they get their Big Mac. Pencil and paper still work. Just wait for tomorrow. What will they do next? No more happy food,” wrote one user.

However, another user, a German fast food worker, was quick to offer a rebuttal. “Workers in Germany here. We have also had problems but worse in the past including a complete system failure in December. We ended up having to do things manually including writing orders on paper and only accepting cash,” they wrote.

‘Taking Orders Manually Takes Too Long’

“The issue, especially with only one cash register, is that taking orders manually takes too long. Modern fast food restaurants are designed to serve as many people as possible as quickly as possible. That’s why we have apps and order monitors,” they continued. “We really can’t serve the usual amount of customers manually. McDonald’s is too big and too popular. If the system crashes, then the whole restaurant crashes, even with a manual backup, we cannot provide the service that customers expect.”

According to Bottom Tracker, 64% of individuals have reported problems with the app, 27% have reported issues with checkout, and 9% have reported problems with the McDonald’s website.
