Meet Hetty Wang, Nathan Chen Mother
Nathan Chen doesn’t remember the first time he was on the ice but his mother Hetty Wang does. He told ESPN that his son was so enamored with the experience that he cried when he had to leave the ring for the Zamboni machine. Chen was 3 years old when he skated originally to be a hockey goaltender.
It is Nathan’s mother Hetty’s job to make sure nothing gets in the way of Nathan’s goal of becoming a famous skater. They have been a team for a very long time. He drives it to his home court in Lakewood, California every day. Nathan credits his accomplishments to his mother because it would not have been possible without her.
He played a big role in sparking their interest. He has been a part of every child’s upbringing. For Nathan, he made plays for him to follow and imitate on the ice as a child. Nathan’s sister Alice said Salt Lake Tribune, “I was just thinking about my mom and Nathan who were living on the court. That is our normal life.”
Hetty never envisioned the Olympics as the ultimate goal for her son. He just wants her to enjoy what she wants to do and not care about medals or podiums.
Who Is Hetty Wang’s Husband And Son?
Hetty Wang and her husband Zhidong Chen tied the knot several times before they moved to the country. She tagged along with her husband Zhidong who came to the state to get his doctorate in pharmacy. Then they arrived from Tianjin, China in 1988 and first settled in Carbondale, Illinois. They didn’t know anyone in the states and he couldn’t speak English at the time Nathan revealed during his interview New York Times.
After Carbondale, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and have resided there ever since. They raised their five children in Salt Lake. While speaking to the New York Times, Nathan shared, “They tend not to talk too much about their struggles, but it must be very difficult, coming to a new country, not speaking the language, not having much money, not having friends. . It’s amazing how they can fight it.”
His parents’ struggles pushed Nathan to be better and he credits them for supporting his every sporting choice.
Hetty Wang and her husband have five children. Nathan is the youngest of five children. His other siblings are Alice Chen (@alicefchen), Janice Chen (@janiceschen), Tony Chen (@runtxc), and Colin Chen.
Their eldest daughter, Alice Chen works in social media for Apple News and lives in New York City. Additionally, she owns her own candle company called We Are Social Club, and has worked for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club and production company, Hello Sunshine.
Below Alice is Janice Chen, a University of California, Berkeley graduate who later became the founder of Mammoth Bioscience. He also earned a Ph.D. from the Doudna Lab at UC Berkley, and gave a TedTalk in 2018 about CRISPR diagnostics.
