Some divorces are just circumstances. Look at the late fighter Vicky Phelan. Despite severing her relationship with her husband Jim Phelan, the two remained together for the sake of their children.

Meet Jim Phelan, Vicky Phelan’s Husband
Jim Phelan and Vicky Phelan ended their marriage in 2017. According to the campaigner, no one else was involved in their decision to separate, they just “separated”. She added, “Nobody has an affair. It’s just a situation.”
Elaborating further, Vicky said, “Too much has been thrown at us throughout our married life actually. It hit the fan within six months of marriage when my pregnancy went awry and we’ve been fighting ever since and you can’t keep doing that. You can’t.”
Their divorce came after Vicky was first diagnosed with cancer. But before it returned a few years later, they felt the children had been through enough, and decided to live as a family but not as a couple. “We decided that the kids had enough on their plates without their parents separating but we were no longer together as a couple,” she explained.
Surprisingly, they get along as friends, and life is better; especially for their children. And why don’t they? No one is doing wrong! The campaigner also admitted that if they didn’t get along, the set up wouldn’t work or be healthy, but she’s glad they made the decision before her cancer returned.
“It would have been better if we had got everything done before it all happened last year because it would have been harder to do in the public eye. We already made that decision before my cancer returned,” he added.
Unfortunately, the fighter who exposed the cervical cancer screening scandal died in November 2022, at the age of 48.
“With a heavy burden of sadness, earlier today we said our last goodbyes to our beloved Vicky. He was the heart & soul of our family unit & his passing will leave a void for the rest of our lives, which at this point seems impossible to fill. We cherish the memories of a loving wife, mother, daughter & sister, whose ability to deal with life’s struggles has inspired not only ourselves, but the entire country,” Jim and his children wrote in tribute to their dear departed.
For those who don’t know, Vicky was diagnosed with cancer in 2014. But apparently the doctors made a mistake during her diagnosis and no one told her about it until 2017. A year later, she found out that the cancer was terminal.
Indeed, he sued the hospital and won a settlement of €2.5 million.
Vicky And Jim Phelan Kids
Jim and Vicky Phelan share two children named Amelia and Darragh Phelan. They were born on August 30, 2005, and February 27, 2011, respectively.
According to Vicky, death is not the problem. Instead it was the thought of leaving his children. “That’s what broke my heart,” he added.
“I know the day will come which is my last day. My last sunrise, my last summer,” he continued. And then I will calm down. My ashes will be scattered in the water, on the silver sands of the beach at Doughmore,” said the emotional campaigner.
Also, during his clinical trial in Maryland, he missed Amelia’s 16th birthday when she promised that she would never miss another birthday due to treatment. “That is something I am no longer willing to sacrifice. These moments and events are too precious,” he added.
Unfortunately, Amelia’s 17th was the last she got to celebrate.
