Meet Sara Farr, Wife of late WXRT Host Lin Brehmer
Late WXRT host Lin Brehmer met his wife Sara Farr in New York. They were both studying at Colgate University at the time. The couple celebrated their dating anniversary on December 7. In fact, in 1973, the married couple had their first date.
Lin in 2013, took to her Facebook to commemorate their dating anniversary writing, “Katsu for champagne and sushi last night. The Messiah at the Symphony Center this evening. North Pond Cafe for dinner afterwards. And then A Christmas Carol at The Goodman Theater tomorrow. And oh yeah, my first date with my future wife was on this day in 1973.
Although it is still unclear when they got married, their wedding anniversary was on October 1, 1997.
Sara Farr spoke with the Chicago Tribune about their relationship and marriage. “Yes, we were college sweethearts,” she told the newspaper, adding that they dated for 16 years before getting married. “We don’t want to spoil a good thing,” he said, a smile in his tone. “We got married in 1997 and it was amazing. I learned very early that I had to share Lin with thousands of other people. I understand, and am happy to do so because there is no difference between the man on the radio and the man I know.”
During a summer semester at Colgate, Lin Brehmer worked as a stand-in at WRCU to begin her radio career. “You can play whatever you want,” he said. “It’s a constant experience of discovery.” Brehmer first worked at Albany’s WQBK-FM, where he took on the nickname “The Reverend of Rock and Roll.”
“I worked the Sunday morning shift, so it was a joke that ‘The Reverend’ would come in,” he said. A literature major at Colgate, he seized on the moniker as an opportunity to use quotes from such classics as John Milton. Paradise Lost as a clue to the song.
Lin began working at WXRT in 1984 as its music director, screening 50 to 60 albums each week for gems that should be played on the radio. He received numerous honors for his work from professional journals, including the honor of “Music Director of the Decade.”
“We played an important role in creating the careers of several artists,” Lin said. Over the years, he has interviewed and met many of his rock and roll idols.
“What amazes me is how the biggest artists I’ve ever interviewed — Pete Townsend, Robert Plant, Mick Jagger — are the easiest interviews I’ve ever done,” he said. “They know how to win over people, and when they do an interview, they realize it’s their chance to shine.”
When Lin took over as WXRT’s morning show anchor in 1991, it took him about six months to find his footing. Through his on-air shifts and numerous live appearances, such as his annual seven-hour live broadcast of opening day for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, he eventually won over the crowd.
Unfortunately, his fans were very disappointed after his death at the age of 68 from prostate cancer. On July 12, 2022, Brehmer stated on the radio that he had been battling prostate cancer and would be taking a leave of absence from WXRT beginning July 15 to receive chemotherapy. In November and December 2022, he returned to the air for several weeks. Brehmer died on January 22, 2023, and his longtime colleague Terri Hemmert informed WXRT listeners of his death that morning.
