Meghan Trainor did not have an easy pregnancy or delivery with her son Riley, 19 months. The singer revealed her experiences, including being shamed by neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU, nurses after her son’s birth because of antidepressants, in a recent interview with Romper.
Trainor Looks Back on Her Rough Pregnancy and Childbirth
Trainor, 28, said her pregnancy wasn’t “an easy ride,” and that Riley’s delivery was “rougher.” “I had gained 15 pounds of COVID before I got pregnant, so I felt big, and my face broke out with dermatitis, so it was like eczema around my mouth. I had gestational diabetes, so I had to test my blood all day. I’ve overcome it,” he explained. At the end, Trainor found her son breech and scheduled for a C-section. “I was like, ‘I’m not ready for this, but let’s rock,'” she said. “I’m lucky I don’t have a birth plan.”

NICU Nurse Shames Coach For Taking Antidepressants During Pregnancy
She remembers how cute her son was when he entered the wonderful world but told her husband Daryl Sabara before giving birth to “prepare yourself.” “I saw my aunt give birth to two babies, and they looked like aliens coming out. I told Daryl, ‘Brace yourself because he could be a monster for the first month,’” he said.
Shortly after Riley’s birth, some challenges began. The baby ended up spending time in the NICU because he had trouble getting up to nurse. The NICU nurse suggested that it was Trainor who was to blame for his struggles. “They kept asking me if I was on antidepressants during pregnancy, and I was, but at the lowest possible dose, and all my doctors said it was safe and wouldn’t affect her,” she said. “It’s really messed up. They don’t have a name for what’s wrong. He won’t wake up.”
Five days after Riley was born, she was able to go home. Trainor said she didn’t cry much in the first month which made her a little worried. “We kept saying, ‘Uh oh, what’s wrong with him? Is this what serial killers look like when they’re born? They never cry?,’” he said.

Trainor has many of the basic concerns most new moms have at one point or another. She says she’s worried that she hasn’t babbled enough, and says that motherhood can be stressful, but she loves it. “I can be a pop star during the day and then bathe my child at night?,” she explained. “It’s like, pinch me.
The singer often shares photos of his son on social media. A few months ago, Riley got a pair of glasses to help her see better and Trainor shared the happy moment on Instagram with the video caption, “😭🤓 sweet baby Riley got glasses 😍😍#babyglasses”
Are There More Kids in Trainor’s Future? He Planned It!
Trainor says she will start trying for baby number two this fall. She wants to have at least three, maybe four children. “I would love twins,” she said. “Two for one deal.”
The couple turned their attic into a large schoolroom for Riley and her future siblings because they wanted to educate their children at home. “I want to hire a preschool teacher who can teach emotions. How to handle it when you want to panic and scream, because they usually don’t,” he said. “And not to get dark in here, but [in regular schools, you have to worry about] guns and everything. I don’t really want to send my kids somewhere where I’m just like, ‘See you later!’ It’s horrible. Terrible.”
