Amalija Knavs was born in 1945 and grew up in Slovenia during a turbulent period for the Eastern European country. At the time, the country was transitioning from Nazi occupation to incorporation into the socialist republic of Yugoslavia.
Amalija and her husband Viktor raised Melania and her sister Ines in the town of Sevnica. Then lived in a government housing complex, and Amalija worked in a children’s clothing factory as a pattern maker.
Eventually, Amalija and Viktor moved to the United States, joining Melania. They became citizens in 2018 through a special ceremony in New York City.
The two are often seen with Melania and Donald on trips during their time in the White House. They were also seen visiting the White House on several occasions and spent time staying there.
