Melissa Barrera has no intention of backing down about being proudly pro-Palestinian even in the middle of the holidays!
Just before Christmas, the actor who was fired from the “Scream” franchise for his views on the Israel-Hamas war issued a poignant message about the war, doubling down on his support for Palestine.

On Christmas Eve, Barrera took to his Instagram Story to condemn the Christmas celebration. He posted a photo of Santa Claus delivering presents on one side of the street while a donkey carried what appeared to be a wrapped corpse at the opposite end.
“I hope this Christmas feels…weird,” he began. “I hope you cannot ignore the fact that you are celebrating the birth of a child who was persecuted and targeted and whose parents had to flee to Egypt.”
Comparing the chaotic birth of Jesus to an ongoing war, he added, “Meanwhile millions of Palestinians from that exact part of the world are being persecuted and targeted and forced to leave their homes while they are bombed indiscriminately and relentlessly.”
Barrera ended his message, “Merry Xmas.” The Mexican actor’s post comes more than a month after he was fired from the upcoming “Scream VII” sequel for publicly supporting Palestine.
Last month, the 33-year-old used his IG Stories to blast Israel for treating Gaza “like a concentration camp,” calling the war “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing.”
One of his Instagram rants read, “Gaza is now being treated like a concentration camp. Gathering everyone together, nowhere to go, no electricity no water… People don’t learn anything from our history. And just like our history, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS NATION & ETHNIC BUILDING.”
In another post, the actress wrote, “Palestine WILL be free,” adding, “They’re trying to bury us, they don’t know we’re seeds.”

Unfortunately, Barrera’s message didn’t sit well with Spyglass Media, the production company behind the American slasher franchise. A company representative released a statement announcing that he would be dropped from the franchise because his post was deemed “antisemitic”.
“Spyglass’s position is crystal clear: We do not tolerate antisemitism or hate speech of any kind, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortions or anything that blatantly crosses the line into hate speech. .”
Following Spyglass’ statement, there was an outpouring of reaction from fans and colleagues including director Christopher Landon who wrote on X, “Here’s my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This is not my decision to make.”
As of this writing, Landon has ended his relationship with the “Scream” franchise. “I feel like now is the right time to officially announce my exit from Scream 7 last week. This will frustrate some people and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart really breaks for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on,” he revealed.
Fans also put their full weight behind the “In The Heights” cast, pledging to boycott the thriller.
Barrera Vows to Continue to Speak Even Though ‘Scream VII’ Is Shot
After his dismissal, Barrera addressed the situation in a statement, promising not to stop being pro-Palestinian regardless of the consequences.
“First of all I condemn Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hatred and prejudice in any form against any group of people,” he said. “As a proud Latina, Maxicana, I feel a responsibility to have a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard, and so I have tried to use it to raise awareness about issues I care about and lend my voice to those who need it.”

He continued, explaining that he was speaking out because everyone “regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status” deserves the same freedom, dignity and human rights.
“I believe a group of people not their leadership and no governing body should be above criticism,” Barrera declared before adding that he always prayed for an end to the violence and loss of life.
Concluding his statement, he sent a strong message to his critics, “I will continue to speak up for those who need it most and continue to support peace and security, for human rights and freedom. Staying silent is not an option for me.”
