Memphis family devastated after porch pirates steal grandmother’s ashes

A Tennessee woman is grieving the loss of her grandmother for the second time after her ashes were stolen by porch thieves.

“He is definitely my rock when it comes to grandparents. He was there for all the graduations, all the birthdays,” Amy Rost told WREG.

“Of course it’s difficult. It’s one of those things where we try to weigh the merits of the situation,” Rost said.

Rost’s grandmother died in October. He was cremated, and his ashes were divided between Rost’s father, Jeff, and his aunt, who lived in Ohio, and sent to Jeff’s home in Memphis’ Midtown neighborhood.

Tracking information shows that the package containing the ashes was delivered on December 4 — but when Jeff went outside to remove it from his front porch, there was nothing there.

He believes the irreplaceable package was stolen by a thief.

“We have had so many things stolen here. Everything from tables and chairs to a can of Raid. Someone always comes and takes whatever they find,” he told the outlet.

Memphis ranked as the second-worst city in the country for porch pirates, according to a report by Safewise last month.

Nationally, package theft has caused up to $6 billion in losses nationwide, if the average package stolen is $50, according to Safewise. More than half of the packages stolen were from Amazon.

The family is now appealing to whoever took the box to return it — no questions asked.

“If I see someone carrying a box and leaving it on the porch, I’ll leave it until they’re gone,” Jeff told WREG. “I’m not trying to sue anybody, it’s just that it would be nice to have it back.”

The Rosts said they plan to install security cameras to deter future thieves.
