Message was ‘privately delivered’ to Iran after strikes on Houthi targets, Biden says

President Biden said on Saturday that the United States had “personally” delivered a message to Iran over its support for the Houthis targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea.

As he headed to Camp David for the weekend, Biden was asked on Saturday what message was being sent to Iran by a pair of attacks targeting dozens of facilities in Yemen controlled by Tehran’s proxies.

“We delivered it personally and we are confident that we are well prepared,” the president replied.

On Friday, US officials said the Navy destroyer USS Carney fired a Tomahawk surface-to-air missile that hit a Houthi radar site used to target ships in the Red Sea.

The attack was described as a “follow-up action…to degrade the ability of the Houthis to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels,” the Central Command write on X.

Friday’s attack followed a broader airstrike on Thursday led by American and British forces, which struck more than 60 Houthi targets in 28 locations in Yemen, killing at least five and wounding six others.

The series of attacks were carried out in response to a campaign of missile and drone attacks by the Houthis targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

Biden said on Friday that the initial American military strikes on Houthi targets had “already sent a message to Iran …. They know they can’t do anything.”

The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have vowed to retaliate, with spokesman Nasruldeen Amer telling Al Jazeera that “this new strike will receive a firm, strong and effective response.”

Another Houthi spokesman, Mohammed Abdulsalam, downplayed the damage of the attack, saying they would not stop the rebels from continuing their attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea.

Iranian officials insisted that Thursday’s attack was “a clear violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a violation of international law.”

The escalating Red Sea tensions come amid concerns about a growing regional conflict in the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas war.
