Michelle Yeoh will initially play a different role in the comedy drama “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” In a recent interview, he revealed that the actors intended to have his role played by Jackie Chan, with her being cast as his wife.
However, after Chan dropped out of the project, they chose to scrap the script rather than find a replacement. The actress stated that she was surprised when the show’s actors approached her to take on the role, as it is common for the film industry to cast older women in lead roles.
Since its debut, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” has received numerous awards, including two Golden Globes in the latest edition.

In an interview with CNN, Yeoh talked about how playing the lead character in the film was not an original idea that the show’s actors had aired.
The Malaysian actress said that directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert initially approached Chan for the role while she was expected to play his wife.
“It was written for a man,” he told the publication, per Insider. “Whenever a filmmaker tells that story, they also have to realize that it’s show business. ‘I’ve got to write something that someone is going to make into a movie.’ So, they wrote it that way with Jackie and me as wives.”
However, due to the “equal” decision, the duo of Daniel and Chan ended up not working together, which led to a rewrite of the script to introduce a female lead.

After reading the script, Yeoh claimed that he questioned whether Daniels was not “certifiably insane” for giving her the lead role since the film industry is not used to casting older female performers in such capacities.
His concerns were previously expressed by the director couple in an interview with Hollywood Reporter when they explained that they were in a bind after Chan was no longer available, although Yeoh was always in consideration.
Kwan said at the time, per Insider, “We were having trouble thinking of an actor for the father figure, and one of us started to wonder what would happen if we took Michelle’s character and scrapped it, and she became the protagonist? And the movie just opened in a completely different way.”
‘Why Can’t I Do That Too’

In the end, the new idea seemed more enticing even to Yeoh, who shared in his interview that he likes being the one to save the day.
“It’s always the guy who can go on an adventure and save the world and save your daughter, and you think, ‘Why can’t I do that too?'” said the “Crazy Asian Rich” star. “It was very exciting at that point to get a script that said, ‘This is a very ordinary woman, an Asian immigrant woman, dealing with all these problems that we can all relate to.'”
Yeoh also praised how the film pushes the narrative that women are “superheroes,” sharing that she shares the same idea.
‘Everything Everywhere At Once’
Yeoh played Evelyn Wang in “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” a worn-out Chinese immigrant who runs a failed laundry service with her husband. His seemingly routine trip to an IRS audit for his company turns into a strange and multi-level adventure.
Yeoh stars alongside a host of talented actors, including Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, Tallie Medel, Jennie Slate, and Harry Shum Jr.
The film has received critical acclaim since its release in the second quarter of 2022. It was nominated in six categories at the recently held Golden Globes awards ceremony, which ultimately scooped the prize for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Film and Best Film. Performance by an Actor in a Film – Musical or Comedy.
More awards are expected to be received following its nominations for ten categories in the upcoming Oscar ceremony, which will be held on March 12, 2023.
