Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell asserted that her home state is “purple” ahead of the 2024 election and noted voter concerns about the War on Israel.
“Michigan is the purple state. I can’t always convince people of that,” Dingell told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “I came back in 2015 and 2016.”
Trump won the Great Lakes State in 2016 but lost to Biden 47.84% to 50.62% in 2020. Democrats retain control of both the governor’s office and the legislature.
“We really need to talk about the economy — the jobs that have been created, the kind of investment that has come in and show what has been done. We need to show and remind them of the action,” he added.
Trump now has a 4.8 percentage point lead over Biden in Michigan, according to the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.
Generally considered one of the top seven battleground states, Michigan touted 16 electors in the Electoral College, which Trump lost to Biden 232 to 306.
Dingell also said the ongoing war in Israel weakened Biden’s prospects in Michigan, which has one of the largest Muslim populations in the country.

“They are sick. All of us in this country need to understand what is happening in Gaza now,” he stressed.
“I can’t tell you the number of families I’ve talked to that have lost entire families — entire families. We need to show empathy and compassion.”
The Michigan Democrat emphasized his support for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which have been at war since the terrorist group’s bloody surprise attack on October 7.
Biden was largely a staunch supporter of Israel in the public eye during the early stages of the war. Behind the scenes, he pushed for more protection for civilians in combat.

Recently, he has begun to change his tune a bit and is more pressing for Israel to minimize civilian casualties.
“I want them to focus on how to save the lives of civilians. Don’t stop going after Hamas, but be more careful,” Biden told reporters last week.
Dingell, wife of the late Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) also defended Biden over the GOP impeachment inquiry centered on his family’s alleged influence peddling scheme.
“I’ve talked to a lot of Republicans who have openly and quietly said, ‘it’s not there.’ They couldn’t find anything,” he said.
His comments came shortly after Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) told the program that, “if there’s a smoking gun I think we’re going to talk about it.”

He also appeared to support first son Hunter Biden’s decision to resist a subpoena for testimony this week.
“I think he has the right to say, ‘I’m going to do this. Be transparent. Open it.’ Because I think too many people come out of this and imagine things that aren’t true. And I think we all have the right to know the truth,” he said.
Hunter Biden offered to testify publicly but refused to sit for a closed deposition as requested by Republicans.
Now Republicans are considering whether to hold him in contempt of Congress, which will refer the matter to the Justice Department for possible prosecution.
At one point in the interview, Dingell also revealed that he is not a fan of illegal immigration.
“We don’t want illegals. We don’t want anyone else in. We don’t want drugs crossing our borders. We need a balanced and comprehensive immigration policy,” he said.
