Michigan mom miraculously wakes up from five-year coma, attends son’s senior night football game: ‘Nobody expected her to wake up’

The star of Michigan’s high school football team during its senior night game isn’t one of the athletes — but a mother of three who just woke up from a five-year coma.

Jennifer Flewellen stunned the entire community for the second time on October 20 when she appeared on the sidelines to cheer on her 18-year-old son, just 15 months after waking up from a years-long hibernation.

“No one expected him to wake up,” Peggy Means, Flewellen’s mother, told WNDU.

“We were told all along that he had anoxia and brain damage, he wouldn’t wake up, but you never say no.”

The 41-year-old mother of three was seriously injured in a car accident in September 2017 where she skidded across the road and hit a utility pole.

He was found unconscious at the scene and remained in a coma for 4 years and 11 months, making his recovery remarkable and prompting doctors to call him “the miracle of life.”

Flewellen’s return to the field has been long-awaited — the community remembers her as a dedicated mother who was always the loudest cheerleader standing on the sidelines.

“He really pushed them, and he was a big screamer,” Means said. “Everyone who knows Jenn, she’s very vocal. They (her children) used to say, ‘I can’t hear my coach, Mom. You’re stronger than the coach.’”

According to Means, her daughter put her three sons in football as soon as possible to keep them out of trouble.

“Just to have the opportunity to have him here to support him and let everybody know that he’s thriving and he’s continuing to get better,” Sara Macon said.

According to WNDU, Flewellen has been living at home since July, about 11 months after he miraculously awoke from a coma.
