Michigan woman accused of setting husband on fire charged with killing popular butcher in house fire

A Michigan woman accused of setting her husband on fire while he slept was arrested last week for allegedly carrying out the same sinister plot to kill the owner of a popular butcher shop.

Julie Boxley, 52, was charged with first-degree murder and arson Friday in connection with the death of her employer and roommate Glenn Andrews earlier this year, according to online court records.

The Andrews home mysteriously burned down in March, and the 72-year-old butcher, who was inside, died from injuries sustained in the fire two weeks later.

He is the owner of Glenn’s Smokehouse, which sells specialty meats in Ishpeming, a town on the Northern Peninsula.

Boxley had moved in with Andrews and his wife, Linda, shortly before the fire to help care for Linda, who was ill, the couple’s daughter Jill told the Upper Michigan Source.

The alleged pyromaniac worked as a caretaker for Linda years ago before moving to nearby Alger County – where she is accused of dousing her husband with liquid and throwing matches at him.

“He showed up on his front porch one day and said, ‘I need a job do you still need help?’ And he said yes, and he said I need a place to live too, and we thought this was great,” Jill told the outlet.

The grieving family said they were shocked to learn that their mother’s dedicated carer may be responsible for Andrews’ death, saying they considered him a member of their family.

“When the detective told us all the information he had and then gave it all to us, I was really beside myself. I can’t believe that people who are so invested in this family … would do that to them. I was just yeah, unbelievable,” said the couple’s daughter-in-law, Melissa.

Boxley spent several weeks in hospital recovering from the injuries he sustained in the fire he claims started.

Family members also set up a GoFundMe campaign to help Boxley get back on his feet after losing everything in the fire. The campaign raised more than $2,200.

“They woke up as smoke started to fill the bedroom and soon found that the entire downstairs was on fire. Glenn, his roommate, had come down the stairs but quickly had to escape through the back door,” the fundraiser said.

“Julie was able to jump out of the 2nd floor window to safety. He ended up with smoke inhalation and frostbite on his feet after having to run barefoot, but Glenn was not so lucky.”

At that time of hell, Boxley was awaiting trial for allegedly trying to burn her ex-husband on Christmas Day in 2021.

James Boxley, who was her husband at the time, has testified that he poured liquid on her and threw matches while she was sleeping.

James Boxley claimed he threw a burning blanket out the window, but his wife continued to attack him, lighting matches and shouting that she hated him.

“Ms. Boxley has a history of mental illness, and I think when we get everything back from the forensics center, we will all see how bad she was at that time,” defense attorney Jennifer France said in August when a judge found enough evidence to order a trial.

Boxley has been charged with grievous bodily harm less than murder and assault with intent to kill for the attack on her then-husband. He has pleaded not guilty and has a pretrial scheduled for next month.
