Jerry Springer met his wife Mickie Velten or Margaret “Micki” Velten Springer on a blind date when he asked a co-worker to find him a date so he could go to the movies with his sister and brother-in-law. The friend set him up with Jerry Springer.
“It was the best blind date you could ever imagine,” Micki told the paper. “He is completely different from anyone else I have ever met. He was completely uninhibited. I think it impresses me because I worry so much about what other people think. Now, I realize it was just Jerry.”

They tied the knot in 1973. A 1974 article in The Cincinnati Enquirer, accessed through Newspapers.com, described Micki Velten as “Jerry Springer’s wife, but she’s not a politician’s wife.”
“He didn’t run for office, I did,” the newspaper quoted Jerry Springer as saying. The article quoted Micki Springer as saying, “I went to campaign with him. In the summer, I go to all the festivals. I can see myself in a situation where I can talk to small groups, but I’m afraid of large groups.” The article says he doesn’t like public speaking.
However, Jerry’s personal and professional life took a turn for the worse in 1974 when it was discovered that he had solicited prostitutes on more than one occasion. “I realized that I couldn’t live my life with this situation hanging over my head, so I told my wife and my family, and then I told his family,” he told PEOPLE.
In 1976, Micki and Jerry welcomed their only child, daughter Katie. He was born legally blind, deaf in one ear, and without a nasal passage.
“That’s the end of the sad story,” Springer told PEOPLE in 1994. “The happy story is that he was a brilliant, amazing kid who overcame a lot.” “She’s a bit of a ham,” he added of Katie. “He probably got that from me.”
However, they divorced in 1994. She was his only wife as he never married again. “My heart is gone,” he told PEOPLE at the time.

Lydia passed away at the age of 76 in January 2020. She was a member of Parksville Baptist Church, a retired Office Manager from McAlpins Department Store after thirty-one years of service, she worked for the Cincinnati Bell Telephone Company, and was a cover girl for the Phone Book Cincinnati and Business Line Magazine. He also owns Ace Billiards in Danville with his son.
His other sister Georgina Lynn Velten Bugg died in 2005.
