Mayor Eric Adams has blamed the rise of prostitution in Corona, Queens on the influx of Venezuelan immigrant women struggling to find other work.
Democrats said Tuesday that “illegal” activity was taking place in the area and said it was just “one example” of how the country’s migrant crisis is affecting the city.
It is not clear if these Venezuelan migrants were sex-trafficked to do this act or if they asked for sex of their own free will.
But, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Adams said: “This is what happens when you create an environment where people can’t provide for themselves — you can’t work, you can’t provide your job and have to turn to illegality. activities to do so.”
“When I talk about the growing impact of how this is going to affect our city, this is what I’m talking about,” he said. “We will create a generational problem based on the failure of the national government, and this is an example.”
Adams added that another of these red-light districts has emerged in East New York, Brooklyn, where he says prostitution “is evident in broad daylight.”

He later slammed city officials who “believe it’s a victimless crime” and tried to get prostitution legalized.
“This is where idealism collides with realism,” he said.
“I had an appointed officer tell me that the woman was just trying to work [and ask]’Why are you trying to hurt them?’”
But, the mayor said, “There are real issues around illegal sex work, not just from STDs to sex trafficking to the young girls involved in it, to violence.

“So people who don’t understand how serious this is, they’re holding back our progress,” Adams said of city lawmakers pushing for prostitution legalization.
He added: “We need a real partnership to prosecute the johns, we want to focus on the johns, and we want to focus on giving help to sex workers to make sure they are not forced into this activity, but also. comply with the law.”
Under New York law, prostitution is considered a Class B misdemeanor and is punishable by up to three months in jail and/or a fine of up to $500.

But the law still hasn’t stopped these Venezuelan immigrants from soliciting men on Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, which The Post exclusively revealed in July has become an open market for sex dubbed the “Market of Sweethearts.”
The woman can be seen hanging out in front of pool halls, dentist shops, and massage parlors day and night, even recruiting neighborhood kids to hand over their X-rated business cards, the concerned mother told The Post.
It was featured twice in September on “The NYC Walking Show,” a YouTube channel that offers first-person tours of iconic Big Apple neighborhoods and attractions like Yankee Stadium and Times Square.
“It just amazes me what happens during the day,” said Sifat Razwan, the YouTuber behind the channel. “It’s worse than during the day.”
“Vice versa [is] it’s very eye-opening that this is what actually happens outside of all the glamorous parts of New York,” added Razwan, 24, from Jamaica, Queens.

One resident even compared the neighborhood to a red-light district in the Thai capital that has gained a reputation for being prolific and cheap sex workers.
“But this doesn’t feel like New York anymore,” Ramses Frias told The Post. “It’s like Bangkok, the red light district. It’s like a market in a third world country.”
“We don’t want to have to walk around our streets walking through trash,” added Frias. “We want to walk like New Yorkers, with our heads held high.”
