Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy open up about their wives’ miscarriages during Iowa forum

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy got a personal statement Friday, discussing the impact of miscarriage on their families during an Iowa roundtable forum on Friday.

The Family Heads Thanksgiving Forum, organized by an evangelical Christian group, offered DeSantis, Ramaswamy and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley a rare opportunity to discuss issues important to voters outside of a debate sanctioned by the Republican National Committee.

While discussing abortion, DeSantis, 45, and Ramaswamy, 38, revealed for the first time publicly that their wives, Casey DeSantis and Apoorva Ramaswamy, suffered miscarriages.

“We wanted to have a family, and it didn’t happen at first,” DeSantis said. “We ended up traveling to Israel when I was a US congressman, and we actually went to Shiloh with Hannah’s Prayer. We went to Ruth’s Tomb in Hebron – Ruth chapter 4, verse 13 – and we prayed. We prayed a lot to have a family, and then lo and behold, we came back to the United States, and soon after, we got pregnant, but unfortunately, we lost the first baby,” DeSantis said.

“And, you know, it’s a difficult thing because this is something that we really hope for a lot of aspirations,” he added. “But, you know, we’re just keeping the faith. We continue to pray. We knew that there would be a way that God would lead us, and lo and behold, you know, a short time, we did it, and we had our first baby girl, and we didn’t stop after that.”

Ramaswamy, sadly, shared a similar experience.

He recalled being “thrilled” when Apoorva became pregnant with their first child about halfway through his medical residency. The couple wrote letters to their unborn child “every night” during the pregnancy, hoping to “communicate the stories from our parents and grandparents that we wanted to tell.”

“About three and a half months, you know, Apoorva, one day he woke up, he said, ‘I’m bleeding.’ She had a miscarriage. We lost our first child. And that is loss of life. It is our family’s loss,” said Ramaswamy.

“He went through a stressful situation after that and it was our faith that got us through,” he added.

Ramaswamy, holding back tears, also discussed how a few months later his wife thought she was having a second miscarriage but doctors found a heartbeat, and then their son, Karthik, was born.

The youngster joined Ramaswamy on stage after he told the story and remained on his father’s lap for the remainder of the event.

The forum offers candidates a rare opportunity to discuss common issues outside of the RNC.AP-sanctioned debate

The three White House candidates have increasingly traded words with each other as the GOP field narrows, but there were no signs of lingering tensions Friday.

The last time the candidates shared the stage, at the Republican’s third presidential primary debate in Miami, a visibly angry Haley mocked Ramaswamy as “scum” after the biotech entrepreneur called out the former ambassador to the United Nations’ adult daughter for a statement about social media platform TikTok. .

During the same debate, Ramaswamy called for RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel to resign and attacked debate co-moderator Kristen Welker, prompting Haley to comment during a podcast interview on Tuesday that Ramaswamy “may have a girl problem.”
