British actor Julian Sands, who was reported missing on January 13 while climbing California’s Mount Baldy, has finally been confirmed dead after human remains found in the area were identified as his.

On Tuesday, the San Fernando Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the body found by hikers in the Mount Baldy area over the weekend was that of Sands.
An official statement read, “The identification process of the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed, and has been positively identified as Julian Sands of North Hollywood, age 65. The manner of death remains under investigation, pending the results of further tests.”
The statement also went on to say, “We would like to thank all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to find Mr. Sands.”

No further details on the cause of death have been released as they are still under investigation.
Sands was first reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area of California, on January 13, Friday, by his wife, Evgenia Citkowitz. An avid hiker in the area when his family lost contact with him before they called for help. At the time, rescue operations continued over the weekend with authorities using all the technology they had, including helicopters, drones, and infrared devices, but the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department later said that all was in vain.

In a 2020 interview with “The Guardian”, Sands revealed he was an avid hiker and that “remote peaks in the high Himalayas, like Makalu” were on his bucket list. He also recalled the time he nearly died, during a 1990s trip in the Andes Mountains when he said he and three others “got caught in a terrible storm above 20,000 feet. We were all in very bad shape. Some of the guys close to we perished; we were fortunate.” Sands also said that the most important life lesson he learned was to “be kind, and take it [life] with both hands, we know it’s short.”
He also said that he wants to be remembered: “As an interesting and funny father by my children.” Sands was previously married to journalist Sarah Sands, with whom he shares a son Henry. Later, he married author Evgenia Citkowitz in 1990, and they had daughters Natalya and Imogen.
He disappeared on January 13, just a week after his 65th birthday, and his three children joined the search in an attempt to find their father, especially since his eldest son, Henry, is an experienced hiker. With bad weather and avalanches hampering all search and rescue efforts, worsening weather eventually forced the effort to be called off. Efforts finally continued early this June even though the body was found by amateur hikers.
The San Bernadino Sheriff’s Department released a statement at the time: “At approximately 10:00 a.m., public hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Department after they found human remains in the wilderness of Mt. Baldy. Fontana Station deputies, along with the Sheriff’s Department’s Emergency Operations Division, responded to the scene.”

On June 21, before the human remains were found, The Sands family seemed at peace with his passing when they released a statement that read, We are very grateful to the search and coordination teams who have worked tirelessly to find Julian. We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with fond memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative entertainer.”
The British actor is best known for his breakout roles in the 1985 film, “A Room with a View” as well as the 90s horror film, “Arachnophobia.” Fans remembered him too, as they offered their condolences on Twitter:
