Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, does not want her mother to be remembered as a late “prop” civil rights activist.
She recently made a post in which she urged people to understand that her mother was an “advocate for peace” even before she met and married Martin.
It coincidentally comes just after embattled actor Jonathan Majors mentioned his mother’s name during his first interview since being found guilty of assault and harassment.

Bernice aims to dispel the idea that her mother played a secondary role to her husband, Martin Luther King. He emphasized that Corretta was not just a supporter but an active contributor to the civil rights revolution, even before meeting Martin blindly in January 1952.
The 60-year-old wrote, “My mother is not a supporter. He was a peace advocate before he met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War.”
Bernice then doubled down on her stance by urging others to reject misconceptions about her mother.
“Please understand…my mama is a strong person,” Bernice said, adding a link to a piece she wrote about Coretta years ago.

Although Bernice did not say whether she was speaking to one person or a group of people with her tweet, it came after Majors made a comparison between Coretta Scott King and his girlfriend, Meagan Good.
Majors made the comparison during an interview with ABC News Live’s Linsey Davis after he was convicted of assault and harassment over a domestic dispute with his girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
“He’s an angel,” the 34-year-old said of Good, who has been by his side for several of his court appearances.
“He held me like Coretta [Scott King]. I am very grateful to have it,” he said. “The relationship is still fresh, but you know, I think I’ve found it.”
The “Creed III” actor is set to be sentenced in February, with a possible one-year prison sentence for the assault conviction. Additionally, a harassment conviction can result in 15 days in jail and a $250 fine.

Meanwhile, Majors made several revelations during his interview with ABC, his first since the guilty verdict.
He told his interviewer that he was “shocked” and scared by the jury’s decision, which he now plans to appeal.
“I stood there, and the decision came down. I said, ‘How is that possible based on the evidence, based on the prosecution’s evidence, let alone our evidence? How could that be?’” Majors said at the time, per Caretaker.
The actor also revealed that he doesn’t know how his ex Jabbari got the cut on his body after their fight.
“I hope to God I know. That would give me clarity, that would give me some peace about it,” the former Marvel star said, adding that he never hit her during their two-year relationship.
