The moment police fired shrapnel at a woman who had broken into her friend’s house in Houston with her permission because she forgot her keys was captured in newly released body camera footage.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office released point-of-view footage of the early Feb. 3 incident that left Eboni Pouncy shot five times, in what the 28-year-old defense attorney said was “unnecessary and excessive force” by deputies.
Police had arrived at 90 Uvalde Road after a caller said an intruder had entered her apartment. After finding the woman’s home safe, another resident of the complex said someone had broken into an upstairs apartment, according to police.
Bodycam footage captured two female deputies going upstairs, observing “the front window screen removed, the glass broken and the shutters raised, near the front door” and knocking on the door and announcing themselves before retreating and looking through the window with a gun drawn.
“Someone’s coming,” someone was heard saying before the two deputies fired several shots at Pouncy through the window, with one of them pausing to reload his weapon.

Officials said police had seen Pouncy inside the apartment carrying a gun, which they said was found near the entrance in the apartment.
Pouncy hit the officer five times in the leg and torso, his high-profile civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, said, according to ABC News.
Pouncy had confiscated his legally registered firearm because he was surprised by the police visit and feared intruders, according to Crump.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Eboni Pouncy as she recovers not only from her gunshot wound, but also the mental trauma that accompanies being shot,” Crump said.
“It’s heartbreaking that this tragedy, reminiscent of the shooting that killed Breonna Taylor, happened at all,” he said, referring to the 2020 incident that killed a Louisville woman during a botched police raid on her apartment.
The sheriff did not file charges against Pouncy or her friend, who had told her 20 minutes earlier to break into her apartment, the woman said at a news conference last week, according to ABC News.
Police were alerted to a possible burglary at the apartment in the early morning hours of February 3. The uninjured resident was ordered downstairs and handcuffed by police after the shooting.
“I live here. Please don’t shoot,” he pleaded with police, according to cellphone video obtained by network affiliate KTRK.
The sheriff’s department’s internal affairs unit and the local prosecutor are investigating the deputy’s actions. Both were reportedly placed on administrative leave while the case was referred to a grand jury.
