Momo the monkey chugged beer, broke into a home while leading Indianapolis cops on 24-hour chase

He’s a bit of a party animal.

A nearly 24-hour search for an escaped pet monkey in Indianapolis finally ended Thursday — but not before the primate chugged stolen beer, broke into a vacant home and caused several injuries.

Momo was safely caught by the owner’s brother after he crashed into a house that was still under construction, said Lt. William Carter of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The officers are hot on their tails and quickly close the door, forcing Momo into the bathroom where she ends up trapped.

“That’s more than enough monkey business for us,” the department said in a post on Xformerly known as Twitter, to announce Momo’s arrest.

The monkey’s incursion was a lucky break for IMPD, who had been out of reach of the animal since he first left his home in Indianapolis the day before.

Momo is a macaque — the fastest primate on the planet that can travel at speeds of up to 34 mph, according to Southwick Zoo.

Police were called for help on Wednesday after receiving reports of minor injuries from an “aggressive animal,” but it’s unclear if Momo bit anyone.

A bewildered neighbor had just pulled into his driveway after a long day at work when Momo jumped up to welcome him home.

“I got home and started to get out of my car and a monkey walked up to my open car door,” Karri Harbert said in a Facebook post.

“It took me a few seconds to figure out what it was so I closed the door and he jumped onto the hood of my car! I started to get out of my car again and the police (several of them) stopped and told me to stay in the car that there was a very aggressive monkey on the loose!”

Another neighbor spotted Momo drinking a beer he pulled from a trash can, police said, according to WishTV.

After her capture, Momo was taken into the custody of the Indianapolis Animal Care Services, which turned her over to staff at the Indianapolis Zoo for now, said Katie Treennepohl, deputy director of the Indianapolis Animal Care Services.

Although a permit is not required in Marion County to own such an animal, the county prosecutor’s office is determining whether or not Momo will be returned to her owner.

The owner was issued a citation for the monkey “chasing and approaching in an unsafe manner” while escaping in a residential area.

The incident is not the first time Momo has broken free and terrorized Indianapolis.

Animal services were called to deal with him after he escaped as recently as July, Treennepohl said.

He said that anyone who had direct contact with Momo while on the lam should contact the local health department because of concerns about “human-transmissible diseases.”
