‘Monster’ Brandon Thompson says he ‘saw red,’ admitted to beating UWM student: docs

Self-described “monster” Brandon Thompson told police he “saw red” before he allegedly raped and beat an unsuspecting University of Wisconsin-Madison student to within an inch of his life.

The 26-year-old man told investigators he remembered hitting the stranger repeatedly over the weekend, but could not be sure he sexually assaulted him, according to court records obtained by the Wisconsin State Journal.

Thompson silently bowed her head as she neared court proceedings Thursday as prosecutors detailed “one of the most horrific sexual assaults in recent memory here.”

“What we’ve learned in the last 72 hours … is that this defendant was just driving down the road and saw the victim, never interacting or contacting the victim first, and spontaneously decided to pull his car over, most of this happened on camera, follow him for some distance around the Downtown area, and then attacked him,” Dane County Deputy District Attorney William said at the preliminary hearing.

Thompson allegedly broke the woman’s jaw, broke several of her teeth and choked her after lunging at her as she walked through the college town’s commercial district around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The survivor remains hospitalized in critical condition after being diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury.

He has not yet given a police statement due to his condition.

After allegedly assaulting the woman, Thompson remained at the scene “covered in blood” and told witnesses he had been “walking high” when he found the naked, bloodied and unconscious woman lying in the street, the criminal complaint states.

A witness told police Thompson seemed “fidgety” after they decided to call 911, which he said was drunk around officers.

He fled when police arrived, but was arrested three days later after police linked him to a car seen on neighborhood surveillance footage.

Thompson reportedly told investigators he was angry that night and became very angry after seeing his victim.

He claimed to have blacked out and woke up to find the woman on the ground.

“The only thing I remember was just hitting,” he told detectives. “He ran into a monster.”

According to the criminal complaint, he said he could not remember sexually abusing the victim, but admitted that he could.

DNA samples would later link Thompson directly to the woman, however, according to police.

The most “frightening” aspect of the attack – apart from the lack of contact between the attacker and the victim – is that Thompson had a clean record before being charged with the brutal crime.

“This guy is probably our biggest public safety threat living in this county right now,” Brown said, asking for $2 million bail.

“He seems like a very appropriate, normal person in our community.”

Thompson’s defense team argued that his clean record — as well as the “inconsistencies” they claim they found in the prosecution’s case — should warrant a $10,000 bond, which the judge quickly shot down.

Thompson was eventually ordered held on $1 million.

He faces charges of first-degree sexual assault, first-degree reckless wounding and strangulation.
