More than 18,000 people have evaded border patrol agents and slipped into the United States illegally since Oct. 1, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens announced Tuesday.
The staggering number of so-called “absconders” – people known to have entered the country illegally without being caught – equates to about 1,125 people per day over the past 16 days.
“This is an individual whose identity & purpose we do not know,” Chief Owens wrote on X.
“That’s why you need every Border Patrol agent to be in the field and doing patrols,” he said.
The announcement comes as Border Patrol agents are stretched to the limit as they try to deal with a large influx of people who turn themselves in at the border and seek asylum in the US.
Former Border Patrol chief Rodney Scott recently told The Post that the number of people crossing the border means agents have to spend all their time processing immigrants and filling out paperwork for them, instead of patrolling the border looking for drug smugglers, terrorists and potential fugitives. .

His sentiments were echoed by National Border Patrol Council chief Brandon Judd, who said: “We’re not out there actively doing law enforcement work — we’re doing administrative work. We are not protecting the American people.”
The October figures offer a foreboding picture of the year ahead at the US border, which has seen the number of refugees rise every year since President Biden took office in 2021.
Border Protection Agents have not yet released a complete vacation estimate for fiscal year 2023, but as of May there were an estimate of 530,000 — suggesting a full year will break the record 600,000 vacation estimate in 2022.
Before that, at least 389,000 refugees made it into the country in 2020, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

In total, more than 1.5 million people have slipped into the US without arrest during the three years of Biden’s term, according to various estimates.
In contrast, there have been a total of 415,000 refugees during the last three years of Donald Trump’s presidency.
Combined with the more than 2.3 million immigrants who have arrived at the border and been allowed into the country with notices to appear in immigration court, nearly four million people have been allowed into the US since Biden took office, according to figures compiled by Syracuse University’s TRAC immigration database. .
A court notice to appear before an immigration court — known as an NTA — can be given to asylum seekers years in advance, where they are allowed to stay in the US.
The number of court dates issued has completely overwhelmed the system – there is now a backlog of approximately 2.7 million cases that are still pending, according to TRAC.
