Josaphat, after a minor traffic accident. Morgan, 39, at the time, asked for $10 million in settlement. Under the agreement, which must be approved by the City Council, the two sides will not discuss the amount of the settlement that was later settled out of court.
After six hours of negotiations mediated by a Santa Monica Superior Court judge, the actor told, “Let’s just say I’m happy this is behind me and I’m looking forward now to resume my life and career”. Police reportedly arrested him in August 1989, on suspicion of drunken driving after a minor accident on the Pacific Coast Highway. The accident happened on the way back to his home in Malibu after a doctor’s appointment. A blood alcohol test later cleared him of driving under the influence.
The investigating officer mistakenly assumed Morgan was drunk because he had just taken prescription painkillers for back pain, and because of surgery on his vocal cords, he was unable to make himself heard. He argued that the beating occurred after authorities detained him for 1 1/2 hours at the West Los Angeles police station. Then they released him after posting $500 bail.
The actor suffered a broken nose, a broken cheek, a dislocated jaw, and nerve damage on the right side of his face as a result of the beating, he said.
