The singer, who lost both her grandmother and aunt to pancreatic cancer and had an aunt diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age, decided to take control of her health after her cousin tested positive for the RAD51D gene mutation.
This result is cause for concern because it increases the risk to 20 to 40 percent for breast cancer. Choosing the path of prevention, Wade, with the encouragement of his mother, Robin, opted for genetic testing and received a positive result.
On November 18, she underwent a four-hour operation, not only performing a double mastectomy but also undergoing reconstructive surgery. Despite knowing the weight of his choice, Wade admits to feeling nervous as the surgery date approaches.
Drawing strength from her mother, who had undergone the same procedure and a pre-dawn exercise ritual, she faced the surgery with determination.
Speak to PEOPLEthe 28-year-old shared his journey, which was made possible with the help of the non-profit Mission Plasticos.
“I finally get to wear a hoodie! That’s good because it’s a button-down shirt and anything that can zip up for a minute,” he exclaims, highlighting the small joys of recovery in the midst of challenging times.
At the same time, Wade faced enforced downtime after surgery, a struggle for someone accustomed to an active and physically fit lifestyle. Still, for her, it was a worthwhile sacrifice, offering a future free from the shadow of breast cancer that lingered in her family.
