The mother of one of the Kentucky mothers who was allegedly drugged and raped at a Bahamas resort knew “something wasn’t right” before she received disturbing text messages revealing the alleged assault earlier this month.
“Call us now we’ve been drugged and raped,” Frankie King, Dongayla Dobson’s mother, recalled the message to Fox News.
Dobson and her childhood best friend Amber Shearer were on a Carnival Cruise where they spent a day relaxing at Pirates Cove Resort on the Grand Bahama coast in February.
The mothers were spending time on the beach when a resort staff member offered them a two-for-one drink deal, Dobson said.
They received two tropical drinks, one in pineapple and one in coconut, but soon found the drink stronger than expected, becoming extremely drunk 15 minutes after their first sip, Dobson told NewsNation’s “Cuomo.”
King knew something was wrong when she spoke to Dobson on Facetime that morning and noticed her daughter seemed “a little weird.”

“I asked him if he was ok and he said ‘he’s fine’ and just sat at the bar for a drink,” King recalled.
“A few minutes later I logged into Facebook and saw a video where they were everywhere and just laughing and laughing and not being themselves.”
After watching the footage, King said she called her daughter back to make sure the two friends were okay, and questioned how many drinks they had already had.
Travel advisories issued for Bahamas, Jamaica
- The US Embassy issued a strict security warning and travel advisory on January 24 after the Bahamas saw 18 gang-related murders in January.
- The US Embassy warning urges tourists to use “extreme caution” east of the Bahamas capital, Nassau.
- Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis said in a statement that the government is “alert, concerned, and proactive” in ensuring the island nation “welcomes” tourists.
- The State Department issued a stern travel warning for Jamaica after it was rocked by 65 murders last month. The US Embassy in Jamaica upgraded its travel advisory to Level 3, “Reconsider travel,” which is just one level short of the worst, which warns Americans against traveling at all.
- Bahamian and Jamaican tourism boards insist the country is still safe for tourists despite the United States’ warnings.
Dobson reportedly told his mother he still hadn’t finished a full drink.
“They didn’t drink much, but I’ve seen both girls drunk,” King said. “I know there are other things going on. Like something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.”
Dobson and Shearer were allegedly lured to a secluded area by a male resort staff member to search for shells amid disturbing videos and haunting text messages.

When he came, Shearer told NewsNation he was in the process of “raping me.”
The two were eventually found unconscious in the bathroom by another resort employee.
“Every parent’s worst nightmare,” King said. “Your child is in trouble, in danger and scared and they’re 300 miles away, I can’t reach them.”
After the incident was reported to the resort and local police, two male staff members, a 40-year-old from Southern Bahamas and a 54-year-old from Eight Mile Rock, were arrested by the Royal Bahamas police in connection with the sexual assault.

While Dobson and Shearer were on the cruise, the US embassy in the Bahamas issued a safety alert and travel advisory after 18 murders occurred in the country throughout January.
The furious mother reiterated her daughter’s desire to share photos of her injuries to warn others about the dangers of traveling to the Caribbean country.
“Their biggest thing to start broadcasting so soon after it happened is that they want people to be aware that it’s a dangerous place, because they feel like they have no warning,” King said.

Pirates Cove Resort, however, claims that the surveillance footage does not match Dobson and Shearer’s account of what happened.
“Upon further review of the surveillance video, claims made on the site, and in subsequent social media posts and news stories, contradict the content of the time-stamped surveillance video,” Pirate’s Cove beach resort said in a statement without disclosing further details, the Daily Mail reported. .
