Mysterious flesh-like golden orb found at the bottom of the ocean ‘like the beginning of a horror movie’

Deep-sea explorers think they’ve struck gold — or maybe something sinister.

A team of deep-sea researchers discovered a mysterious meaty golden ball on the ocean floor — an alien-like thing that felt like “the beginning of a horror movie.”

A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) team found the mysterious ball on Wednesday last week about two miles down in the “deep abyss of the Gulf of Alaska,” the Miami Herald said.

The mysterious ball looks like meat — with an even more puzzling hole inside.

“Something is trying to get in … or get out,” a researcher said in a live feed of the Seascape Alaska mission.

“I just hope when we poke it, something doesn’t decide to come out,” said another, according to the Herald. “It’s like the beginning of a horror movie.”

“I’m pretty sure this is how the first episode of The X-Files started,” another team member said, according to The Mirror.

The team, exploring an extinct volcano 250 miles off the south coast of Alaska, used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and “licked” the eggs, the reporters said, which made them realize they were as smooth to the touch as skin tissue. .

The ROV then “sucks” the strange object up the tube so it can be tested in the lab.

Until then “the ball remains a mystery,” NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer Emily Crum told The Mirror Tuesday, after speaking with expedition coordinators

“It sounds like they won’t learn more until after the expedition is over and they can bring the specimens into a full lab environment,” he said.

Although still puzzled, scientists have speculated, with some thinking it could be an eggshell or sponge residue, the report said.

“When our collective knowledge can’t identify it, it’s weird,” said one team member. “What kind of animal would make an egg case like that?”

The dive is part of the Seascape Alaska 5 expedition, which begins August 24 and will continue through September 15.

During the exploration, broadcast live on NOAA, scientists will record video of areas never seen by humans, including some as deep as 4 miles.
