They see a double problem.
Upper East Side parents and caregivers are up in arms — and calling authorities — about a pair of mysterious identical twin women who don’t have children of their own but often hang out at the John Jay Park playground. They say the two creep around their children, pique their interest — one caregiver recalled her twin wanting to braid her young charge’s hair and then photograph the child — and ask invasive questions.
“This is my daughter’s playground. I don’t want adults around children,” Paulina, a 35-year-old mother of four, told The Post.
Last Wednesday, he saw the two 40-year-old women – known as the “Indiggo Twins” but their real names are Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea – in the park. She recognized them from photos posted on online mothers’ groups and immediately called the police.
“I don’t know why they don’t do something better with their lives than hang out at the playground,” Paulina fumed. “You have to draw the line.”

Last week, after many parents voiced concerns to Community Board 5, the Parks Department posted a sign on the gate outside the entrance to the playground that read, “No adults unless accompanied by a child.”
But while the twins had violated the park’s stated rules, the department was not advised of any actual illegal activity involving them.
However, some carers say the siblings are too close. One caregiver recalled feeling uncomfortable after they asked the name and age of one of the babies she was caring for.

The nanny who recounted the bizarre hair-braiding incident said she left the park and took her 3-year-old son home shortly after the encounter.
“It was really scary,” the nanny, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Post. “Maybe he wants to do something else.”
The mother had been voicing about the twins for months in a local Facebook group.
“If you’re not with the kids, stay away from the playground,” one parent wrote in the thread.

Another parent pleaded, “Call whoever you need to call to keep our kids safe.”
But, the Modorceas say that they are unfairly insulted.
“We have lived here for 16 years. For 16 years we have been going to John Jay. It is the closest to us. It was a completely false alarm,” said Gabriela.
The story of the brothers, according to them, is that they were born in Transylvania in 1983 and went to the National University of Arts in Bucharest. In 2006, they came to the US to pursue careers in music and theater. They settled in a modest Upper East Side apartment where they lived with their mother. Gabriela plays piano and works as a composer while Mihaela plays guitar and writes songs.

Before they made parents bristle with their playground presence, the twins had some more positive brushes with fame.
In 2008, they appeared on “America’s Got Talent.” The following year, they were in a New York Post story about staying healthy. In 2011, they were photographed kissing Robert De Nero at the Vanity Fair party. That same year, one of their songs was sampled on Jay Z’s “Watch The Throne” album. In 2017, they performed a song from their Off-Broadway play “Wicked Clone” on “Good Day New York.”

“The way we see [in the parenting group] – we look like criminals. A hardened criminal. My weapon is love,” said Gabriela. “We Christians, we are all about promoting love and light.”
“It was a complete false alarm. It is the opposite,” added Mihaela.
Not all Upper East Siders find the siblings troubling.
“They don’t seem dangerous to me. Strangers, yes, but they have interacted with us and I don’t think it’s a threat,” Lucilla, a 33-year-old nanny, told The Post. “They have men who come to the park who don’t come with children. They have a small child who smokes. That’s the one [authorities] need to focus. I don’t think they need to worry [the twins].”

In a statement, the Parks Department told The Post, “We will increase our patrols of our Parks Enforcement officers around the playground to monitor.” Their organization has advised parents to report any illegal activity to the NYPD.
Spinning about the playground last Wednesday, wearing the matching, flowing, multi-colored dresses they designed, Gabriela insisted they had no ill intentions. Parents suspiciously watched them from afar. Some wheeled their prams out of the playground after seeing the couple.

“We love children beyond belief,” Mihaela insists, adding that parents just need to be more open.
“When they have spirituality and love growing in their hearts, they will know how to distinguish who is someone who will harm your child and who is filled with love,” he said. “It was a challenging and strange time where people were just too crazy.”
