Mystery tire slashings had tiny Italian town fearing the Mafia — but it turned out to be a dog with gingivitis

It’s not Fredo, it’s Fido.

A series of mysterious tire slashing incidents in a small Italian village that have the locals worried it’s the Mafia turns out to be a dog with gingivitis.

Residents in Vastogirardi, a small town in the Molise region of Southern Italy, began complaining about the strange vandalism in July, The Guardian reported.

In some cases, vehicles were targeted multiple times – leading many to wonder if the Mafia was behind the destruction.

“It’s very confusing, because we can’t know who might be cutting the treres, or what the motive is,” Deputy Mayor Remo Scocchera said, according to the outlet.

“It is a peaceful village,” he added.

In late October, four villagers in the same neighborhood reported that their tires had been slashed, prompting police to conduct undercover patrols and install surveillance cameras, according to The Guardian.

The case was finally cracked last week, when the culprit was caught on camera: a dog named Billy. The dog was filmed gnawing on some tires in the village.

The chewer hybrid had severe gingivitis, which caused him to bite tires to relieve the pain, according to the vet.

The police have no intention of making Billy sleep with the fish for his dental problems and are still investigating before taking official action against the owner, who may be made an offer he can’t refuse: compensate the car owner.

“It’s really a problem – people can’t drive to work because of a flat tire, which costs a lot of money,” Scocchera said.

“Fortunately, it has now been resolved, and it is a positive thing that the perpetrators are not people from the village,” he added.
