Early Life of Nathon Eldon Tanner
Nathan was born on May 9, 1898 in Salt Lake City, Utah where he grew up with his family. He had father Nathan William Tanner and mother Sarah Edna Brown Tanner. Nathan has seven siblings which means he has lots of friends and extended family and has had an amazing childhood.
The whole family immigrated to Canada and then owned a farm in Aetna, which is south of Cardston, Alberta and this is where he actually grew up with his family playing on the farm. He went to elementary school initially and then joined Knight Academy located in Raymond for his high schooling.
He also got post-secondary education at Calgary Normal School. There is no more education that he has. He started working soon and he started working in a grocery store and then a butcher shop. Then in 1919, he began teaching at a small school called Hill Spring. It was here that he met his love and married her.
Nathon Eldon Tanner’s partner’s name is Sara Isabelle Merrill and the couple have five daughters together. When Nathon Eldon Tanner was teaching, he started with a small general store that later became the local post office. This is to supplement his income and take care of his family.
His general store was doing well and this is why he left his teaching job and started running his store full time. Later he also taught in Cardston where he was first a teacher and then a school principal. Then he turned to politics and started as a councilor on the Cardston Town Council.
Nathon Eldon Tanner’s Political Career
Tanner planned to run for the Alberta Legislature in 1935 for the first time in a general election. He ran as a Social Credit candidate in the Cardston district election and successfully defeated MLA George Stringam.
Tanner had no experience in politics despite the fact that he was elected speaker of the Alberta Legislature when the first session of the 8th Alberta Legislature began. He remained speaker until 1937 when he was appointed minister of lands and mines by William Aberhart.
Then Nathon Eldon Tanner became a legislator for about 16 years. In the 1940 general election, Tanner defeated SH Nelson who was an independent In 1944 he won a 3 way race and In 1948 Alberta Tanner easily won a two way race over Briant Stringam who was a Liberal candidate
In 1949, Tanner’s ministerial portfolio was changed by Ernest Manning from land and mines to land and forests. Later he was appointed Minister of Mines and Minerals and this position remained in his portfolio until he retired in 1952.

In 1960, Tanner was called by the LDS Church full-time as an Assistant to the Quorum of the 12 Apostles. Tanner has experience in church leadership and has served as bishop, stake president, and branch president in Canada, in the church he prefers to be called “N Eldon Tanner.” in 1962 George Q Morris died when the vacancy became vacant and it was Tanner who filled it. Tanner also won many awards for his work and profession.

Tanner’s health began to decline but he remained first counselor until his death on November 27, 1982. Tanner died at the age of 82 after which no one was added to the office of first president.
