Natalie Portman Says She’s Open To A Potential Return To ‘Star Wars’

Will award-winning actress Natalie Portman return to the “Star Wars” franchise? The answer may surprise some.

During a recent “Actually Me” video from GQ, the Oscar winner perused a “Star Wars” Reddit thread asking, “Is it possible that Padme / Natalie Portman is coming back to ‘Star Wars?’ His character really deserves the way he was treated in ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and the overall importance to the story of the Original Trilogy?”

Well, Portman gave a direct answer, revealing, “I have no information about this. Nobody has ever asked me to come back, but I’m open to it.”

Natalie Portman Open To ‘Star Wars’ Return

Portman previously portrayed Padme Amidala, the former Queen and then Senator of the planet Naboo, in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, beginning with “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” in 1999. She later reprized her role in “Star”. Wars: Episode II – The Clone Wars” in 2002 and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” in 2005.

Padme eventually falls in love with Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader eventually, and gives birth to their twins, Luke and Leia, at the end of the prequel trilogy. Unfortunately, Padme died after giving birth, losing her zest for life, and watched her husband turn to the Dark Side.

Portman is no stranger to taking a break from and then making a long-awaited return to a beloved film franchise. In last year’s “Thor: Love & Thunder,” she reprized her role as Jane Foster after previously disappearing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World.”

The MCU wrote Jane out of the story saying she and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had split up off-screen, but the two reunited in “Love & Thunder,” with Jane even gaining the power of the God of Thunder by wielding Thor’s old hammer, Mjolnir. It’s Portman’s first on-screen appearance for the MCU in nine years.

Lucasfilm has not indicated any projects in the works for Portman to reprise her role, but several actors from across the franchise and saga have reprized their roles in the “Star Wars” films and television spin-offs. In last year’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi” miniseries, both Prequel Trilogy stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen reprise their roles as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, respectively.

The series also features flashbacks to the two of them in their younger days when they were Masters and Padawans. So, there’s a way Portman could appear again as Padme Amidala if Lucasfilm has some ideas in mind. The “Kenobi” miniseries even brought back Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse from the prequels to once again portray Lars Luke’s Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, along with Senator Bail Organa’s character Jimmy Smits.

Coincidentally, Portman’s “Thor: Love & Thunder” director Taika Waititi is working to direct and co-write a new live-action, theatrical “Star Wars” feature that is in the works. This movie does not have a release date yet.

In 2011, Portman won her first and only Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in “Black Swan.” She was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her role in “Closer.” In 2017, she was nominated again for Best Actress for her portrayal of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in the 2016 film, “Jackie.”

Also, Portman revealed in a GQ video that she kept one of Christensen’s Anakin Padawan braids from the production. However, he later lost it. Although it’s been 18 years since she last jumped into the “Star Wars” universe, it’s nice to see Portman would be open to a return. Whether that will happen or not is yet to be seen.

Until then, fans can still catch Portman’s performances as Padme in the Prequel Trilogy and Jane Foster in the MCU, all streaming now on Disney+.
