Natasha Liu Bordizzo Teases A ‘Huge Journey’ For Sabine In ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Ahsoka’

Actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo is opening up about her role in the new “Star Wars” series “Ahsoka.”

The actress of “The Society” was cast as Sabine Wren, who fans know from the animated cartoon “Star Wars: Rebels.” This will be the first time Sabine will make a live-action appearance, prompting Bordizzo to find a “balance” between the source material and the Disney+ live-action series.

Natasha Liu Bordizzo, “Ahsoka” star Rosario Dawson, and Hera Syndulla actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead all sat down with Entertainment Weekly on their Dagobah Dispatch podcast to discuss the new show. When asked about how he handled the original “Rebels” source material, Bordizzo explained that he tried to find a balance between the animated cartoon and the new show, which premieres on Disney+ this August.

“I watch it all with the intention of capturing the essence of the characters and having this almost stockpile of free memories, which they’ve worked so hard to create. It’s amazing as an actor to have that,” he explained. “But then live action is very different. So I absorb it all, and then forget it all at the same time – somewhere in that balance.”

When asked how Sabine’s character might transition from an animated series to a live-action show, Bordizzo said that Sabine has “been through a lot” but described her as “still a stubborn cookie.” He continued, “But I think you find him at the end of Rebels, he’s a big part of the liberation of Lothal and a lot of people think of him as this hero, but he doesn’t really feel like himself. He just thinks about his duty to his friends. He thinks about the mission, not his hero status. And he has a big journey to go on with Ahsoka, so we find that at the beginning.”

While Natasha Liu Bordizzo said she had to find a “balance” between the original “Rebels” cartoon and the live-action series, “Fargo” actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead said it was actually a “luxury” to have so much information to inform the character of Hera Syndulla, who also will make her live-action debut in the new “Ahsoka” series.

“Having a character that already exists and has such a rich history on something like Rebels, as an actor, it’s incredible,” Winstead said. “Because sometimes we’re tasked with creating our own backgrounds or trying to flesh out characters that aren’t on the page that much. So to play a character that has season after season of a complex storyline and history with all the people in their lives and their relationships and experiences is something I’ve never experienced like that.”

He described her presence and the amount of material to inform his portrayal of the character as “a real luxury, for sure” and also praised “Rebels” and “Ahsoka” creator Dave Filoni for being there “to talk to her every day on set.”

Although Rosario Dawson has played Ahsoka Tano in “The Mandalorian” and made a brief appearance in “The Book of Boba Fett,” she revealed on the podcast that she has to undergo “pretty intense” lightsaber training that lasts two hours a day, seven days a week. “And then you add when we’re actually filming and doing these different battles and having to keep studying them,” he explained.

Dawson noted that Ahsoka was “very fierce from the start,” adding, “It was never a question of whether she was capable. She met every match head-on. There wasn’t an iota of doubt from her, and that’s completely different from someone who learning martial arts in their 40s trying to protect their face.”

In addition to practicing his lightsaber training, Dawson also needs to learn how to “use” the Force in real life to make it translate well on screen. “It’s the intention and the desire behind it,” he explained. “I think I have it more than someone who just wants to move objects.”

“Ahsoka” will be available to stream on Disney+ starting in August 2023.
