When asked what growing up in Flint and playing at the local YMCA meant to Kuzma, he talked about his childhood at the Y. “The YMCA was amazing. For me, it’s a place where I can be safe and I can be myself. A lot of times my mom works eight, nine hours a day and I have to get on the bus sometimes very early in the morning in the summer just to be there and I want to be there because one, there’s nothing to do at home and two, I love basketball,” he said.

“I was able to go to the Y early and play against older boys at 12 when they had their lunch break and to be able to stay until 5 to play with my friends, it helped shape the life I am today.”

Kuzma made an announcement to the YMCA while on the show saying, “I’m donating $1 million to the Flint YMCA.” After a standing ovation he continued, “I am very excited to give you this opportunity. I know for me, the YMCA has been a huge part of my life and I’ve never really had a great resource and for all of you, I want to make sure you have that and the younger generation in Flint. Thank you, YMCA.”

During his interview, Kuzma credited his mother for his success and inspiration. “When I was growing up, he worked two jobs and that hard work and dedication just to make ends meet and put food on the table inspired me throughout my life,” he said. “Seeing that at a young age and seeing how he leads by example for his kids and everything, that’s all I need.”

Kuzma’s mother was on hand at the YMCA during the announcement. He held up one large donation check as he talked about what it meant to him. “I think it’s going to be a great thing for the community and the city of Flint and for the members. I think it’s something they really deserve. They’ve been hanging in there with this Y for years,” he said. “It needs some upgrades, so this is going to be a great thing for the city of Flint and the members and the families, just more space, and a safe place for kids and more programs.”

Kuzma’s mother cried as she thanked her son for serving the community. He then said he was always a good kid and never got in trouble. “I’ll drop him off sometimes before work and he’ll have to stay here for eight hours until I can get off work to get him,” he said. “It just shows the commitment he has and that’s why he’s where he is and I’m very proud of what he’s done on the court but more importantly what he’s done off the court and continues to do.”
