Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving surprised his fans recently when it was announced that he had quietly welcomed a baby with his wife Marlene Wilkerson. No other information was immediately available, but Irving recently sat down with Stadium’s Shams Charania to discuss the birth of his third child, as well as his relationship with his father, mental health and last season’s struggles.

He continued to discuss the birth of his second child with Wilkerson. “I got a chance to catch my son. And this is our second natural birth. I’m a doula, I’m a middle husband, I play every role you can think of just to make a place for my wife to make sure that our son gets here safely. So it’s a blessing,” he explained. “It’s part of my genetic coding. I was made to catch my children. I didn’t get a chance to catch my daughter. He was also supposed to be a natural birth, or a water birth, but when I caught my children, it felt like I was just carrying on an ancient tradition that my family passed down to me as the leader of my tribe. When you get a chance to see that process, the birth process, it’s a different appreciation for women.”

Kyrie Irving Also Talks About His Relationship With His Father And His Mental Health
When the topic of Irving’s father came up in the chat, he talked about the lessons he learned from his father throughout his life, and how his father played the role of both parents after his mother died when he was young. “When I look at my dad, I just, I try my best not to get too emotional because of how much we’ve all been dealing with, and especially him. Being the head of the household is not easy, especially when you have to be a mother and a father. He was both for a long time,” he said. “And some of the things that he didn’t understand that I went through and some of the things that I didn’t understand that he went through and that propelled us into the best friendship and brotherhood that we have today.”
Irving talked about the transition entering the league at age 19 and how life changed for him. “I have to go through a transition. I have to go through failure. I need to understand that life is precious and how you treat others is what you will be remembered for,” he said. “I feel alone. I feel depressed. I feel very worried. And I don’t know how to convey it. It’s not like we’re in a league with psychologists and therapists by our side to help us through everything we need. I’m glad that I’m on my own journey with others who see mental health as a strength rather than a weakness.”
Kyrie Irving Couldn’t Play A Full Season Last Year Because He Didn’t Get The COVID Vaccine
Irving also discussed his contract situation during the offseason and said the decision to return to Brooklyn “was the best decision I could have made.” He said the list is what brought him back and they have something good but won’t talk too much at the moment.
Last season was difficult for Irving who was unable to play at home due to his COVID-19 vaccination status. Deciding not to get the vaccine means he can only play away, and cannot train with his team or play at home. “I was still not feeling well with my ankle at the time so I was dealing with something going on physically and then also for me not being able to be around my team-mates in training and on the road at first,” he explained. ” Yes, it is very isolating and lonely. But it also gave me a positive outlook just because I was able to be there for my daughter at school and I was able to show up for a lot of things that I wouldn’t normally show up for at the beginning of the season.

Kyrie Irving Fights Internal Battle Along With Physical Injuries
Many may not realize that Irving is dealing with an ankle injury. “It was the worst ankle injury I’ve ever had. I think I broke my ankle,” he said. “I still don’t know if I’ll be healthy enough to play this season and I’m doing my best to hide it.”
In addition to physical injuries, Irving struggled with an internal battle that kept him from playing much last season. “It’s a battle every day, brother,” he said. “Do I leave this and live with the results when I can come back to the league? Do I leave the Nets entirely? Do I ask for a trade? Did I give up on my own dream to return home and win a championship? What I did? I have all these goals but I’m not in control of the situation so how do I see it – this is a question I face every day.”
