A 16-year-old girl from Nebraska has been arrested for allegedly slitting the throat of her newborn baby, killing him, according to police.
Officers responded to a home in Gordon Monday after receiving a call that a girl had given birth and the baby was not breathing, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Scottsbluff Star Herald.
The teenager’s father answered the door and told officers they were “too late,” police wrote in the document.
Police entered the house and found the girl’s mother crying while holding the baby wrapped in a blanket.
He repeatedly said the teenager had hurt the baby — and later revealed that his throat had been slashed through his throat and had multiple stab wounds to his chest, the affidavit said. EMS immediately tried to provide assistance.
The girl’s parents told police they believed she took a bone knife from the kitchen and used it to kill her newborn, according to the affidavit.
The teenager allegedly told her mother she had to run out to the store to buy pads because of her heavy period. Not long after, her mother found blood covering the floor and walls of the girl’s bedroom.
When the girl returned from the store about 15 minutes later, her mother confronted her and she allegedly confessed to killing the baby. The girl’s father found the baby in a closet, according to the affidavit.

It is unclear whether the girl’s parents knew their daughter was pregnant before they discovered the bloody scene.
The teenager, who was not named because of his age, was taken to Gordon Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Western Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, according to the Star Herald.
When the police searched the house, they found clothes and towels covered in blood. The police later returned to the house after the father found the missing knife in the girl’s closet.

He is scheduled to appear in court on November 16.
