Nevada substitute teacher accused of coercing 6th grader students to kiss

A Nevada substitute teacher has been accused of encouraging two sixth-graders to kiss and make “inappropriate” comments – including asking the class if they had boyfriends or girlfriends.

Parents of students at Legacy Traditional School, a charter school in North Las Vegas, were reportedly shocked to learn of the teacher’s statement, which they received an email about Thursday — two days after the shocking incident.

Students in a sixth-grade class were encouraged “to kiss each other” by a substitute teacher, who also used “inappropriate language,” according to an email sent to parents, obtained by 8 News Now.

“Who asks sixth graders, ‘Who has a boyfriend and a girlfriend?’ Really, kids aren’t here for that. They are here to learn,” Anais Gallegos, who has two children at the school, told the outlet on Friday.

“What my daughter told me, no, that’s not good,” Gallegos said. “Principals need to do something because just a simple email isn’t going to cut it.”

Robynn Bell’s son, who is also a student in the class, said all the students felt uncomfortable with the substitute teacher’s actions.

Bell also slammed the school for waiting two days to warn parents about what happened, saying that some parents missed the chance to discuss the incident with their children after it happened because they didn’t know it happened.

“None of us had a chance to talk to our kids about it the day it happened when we got home, or the day after that. So, I really felt it was a failure of communication,” Bell said.

Legacy Traditional said in a statement that it had notified the North Las Vegas Police Department about the incident.

“After school, it came to our attention that the substitute teacher, supplied to us by an external substitute teacher agency, made inappropriate comments towards the students. The substitute teacher is not an employee of Legacy Traditional School and will not be returning to the Legacy campus,” the school said in a statement.

The successor agency is conducting its own investigation into the incident, according to the statement.

“At Warisan Traditional School, we maintain a strict zero tolerance policy towards any form of inappropriate behaviour. The well-being of our students remains our top priority, and recognizes the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive and nurturing school environment,” the school added.
