Neve Campbell Welcome To Return To ‘Scream’ Franchise, Says Screenwriter: ‘Door Is Wide Open’

With “Scream VI” set to hit theaters on March 10, it’s been confirmed that fans won’t be seeing Neve Campbell in the slasher film, sadly.

Campbell played Sidney Prescott in the Wes Craven film and reprized the role in the second through fifth installments, starring for twenty-five years, before shockingly exiting the franchise last year.

Despite her sudden departure, screenwriter Kevin Williamson insists that there is still room for her to return whenever she feels like it.

‘Scream’ Screenwriter Says There’s Always Room For OG Star Neve Campbell To Come Back

During the premiere of “Scream VI” in New York on Monday, March 6, Williamson touched on Campbell taking a break from the franchise after more than two decades. “There’s always room for him to come back,” he told Page Six at the event.

“You know, the door is wide open, and if he wants to come play with us again, we’re here. The creator added that the actress is his best friend and keeps in touch.

As you know, Campbell announced his surprise departure from the film series in a statement last June. “Unfortunately, I won’t be doing the next ‘Scream’ movie,” he said. “As a woman, I have to work hard in my career to establish my worth, especially when it comes to ‘Scream’.”

The 49-year-old further explained that he felt the offer he was given “doesn’t match the value I bring to the franchise.”

Despite her painful departure, Williamson isn’t the only one hoping for the queen of horror’s return. Other “Scream” stars, like Jenna Ortega, shared the same sentiment. Ortega stars as Tara Carpenter in the new installment.

The “Wednesday” actress was disappointed that the Canadian star would not be appearing in the sixth installment, as she told Elle magazine, “It’s really unfortunate. Especially because Neve is the greatest, sweetest, most talented woman. The franchise will never be what it is without him.”

Another horror OG actress, Courteney Cox, had similar thoughts about Campbell’s absence from the franchise and what it means for the film as well as herself. Cox played Gale Weathers in the franchise, and while she reprises her role in the latest installment, she supports her co-star’s decision to come out.

In a chat with Variety last month, the “Friends” alum admitted that filming was different without the former lead star. “I miss working with him,” he shared, “but I will support whatever he feels is right.” Cox went on to talk about his role in the film, revealing that he had an “incredible” scene with the killer character, Ghostface.

“I must have been stabbed multiple times and all that,” he continued. “But this time, to work with Ghostface and not know who’s in the mask, it’s a lot of fun.”

The Alabama native didn’t give away any spoilers but revealed a few details to keep fans pumped for the film’s release, assuring that the Canadian actress’ absence won’t negatively affect the film.

The Reason Behind the Decision of the ‘Mona Drowning’ Actor to Leave ‘Jerit’

More than a month after Campbell announced her leave from the “Scream” franchise, she explained more about her decision in a candid interview with People Magazine. The 49-year-old emphasized the unfair offers he received for the new film, which he touched on in his exit announcement.

She talked about feeling unappreciated as a woman in the industry and claimed that her salary would be different if she were a man with the years given to the franchise. “As a woman in this business,” she elaborated, “I think it’s very important for us to be appreciated and fight to be appreciated.”

Campbell added, “I honestly don’t believe that if I’m a man and have done five installments of a big blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number I’m offered is the number a man would be offered.”

The “House of Cards” star shared that she can’t afford to walk on set feeling like she’s worthless and mistreated even though she desperately wants her fans to see her in the new installment. Fortunately, his bold move was welcomed by several of his colleagues including Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy.
