New video of Las Vegas teen Jonathan Lewis fatal beating emerges as family of accused claim knife was involved

A new video has emerged showing a violent gang beating that led to the death of a Las Vegas teenager.

The victim, 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis, appears to throw the first punch in the footage, prompting a group of students to attack him and begin punching and kicking in a hallway near Rancho High School on November 1.

A family member of one of the four teenagers charged with murder in the attack also claimed to The Post that a knife was present during the incident.

In the disturbing new video, a figure in white can be seen lunging at another person who family members of Gianni Robinson, who is now facing murder charges, allege was Lewis and shows him instigating the fight.

The video also shows a second student, who has not been publicly identified, trying to run away from the group and being restrained.

“Jonathan Lewis’ friend told Gianni that he wanted to stab and kill someone in their group,” said the family member, who declined to be identified.

Las Vegas teenager Jonathan Lewis, 17, was allegedly beaten by a group of students using headphones stolen from the teenager or one of his friends. Family members of Gianni Robinson, one of the teenagers facing charges of second-degree murder, denied the allegations.

“Gianni doesn’t know Jonathan Lewis, but they claim someone took Jonathan’s wax pen a week or two [before the fight]. That’s how this thing started.”

Lewis was rushed to hospital and put on life support after being trampled by the gang. He died six days later from his injuries.

The new video still doesn’t have the full context of what led the two students and the gang to confront each other in the hallway.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have so far arrested nine teenagers, ages 13 to 17, in connection with Lewis’ death.

Clark County Unified School District officials declined to comment on the video or whether a knife was involved in the fight. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officials also declined to answer questions because it is still under investigation.

Gianni’s family members said the high school teenager was confused as to why he was being blamed for stealing Lewis’ wax pen because he had been absent from school for several weeks prior to the incident due to family problems.

Family members of Gianni Robinson said an unidentified teenager, who was a friend of Jonathan Lewis, allegedly wielded a knife and threatened other students during the fight.

They also claimed he and other gang members had tried to run away from Lewis and his friend before the fight.

Las Vegas police say Jonathan Lewis was beaten to death by an assailant outside Rancho High School on Nov. 1, 2023.

Lewis eventually caught up with them and allegedly approached Gianni, demanding where his wax pen was, the source claimed.

In extended footage of the fight obtained by The Post, Lewis exchanged words with the teenager before he appeared to punch the boy, Gianni’s family alleges.

“They were all standing watching what was happening and that’s when Jonathan Lewis started swinging,” the family member said. “And as soon as the group got there, Lewis’ friend pulled out a knife and started trying to stab people.”

In the footage, another boy can be seen trying to run away from the crowd and then being stopped, but it is not clear enough to show if he has something in his hand or if there is a knife.

Lewis’ father, also named Jonathan Lewis, claimed in a GoFundMe post that his son died trying to save his friend, who was allegedly put in a trash can by another student.

“None of the people I spoke to who were there said they knew anything about the headphones or anyone being thrown in the trash,” the family member said.

“I also don’t know why they’re trying to make Jonathan Lewis look like a hero because who brings a knife to school if you’re not looking for trouble? Jonathan was the one who walked up to the group and asked for his pen that was taken a week or two ago.”

The source said Gianni stayed home for the next few days until the principal of Rancho High School called to tell the 17-year-old he was expelled.

A day later, Lewis was taken off life support and died in hospital.

Family members of Gianni told The Post that the 17-year-old was not a troublemaker and liked to play video games and play basketball.

“It’s been frustrating because she’s scared and she’s only 17,” the family member told The Post. “He shouldn’t be in jail because he was threatened and Jonathan was an aggressor.”

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said they are still looking for a 10th suspect and have asked for the public’s help in identifying the teenager.
