Newsom insists he’s not running for president, says he backs VP Kamala Harris: ‘No ambiguity’

Gavin Newsom insisted on Monday that he will not run for president in 2024 and tried to play down speculation that he is eyeing a spot on the Democratic presidential ticket by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The answer is no,” the California Democrat told CNN on Monday when asked if he was considering a 2024 presidential run. “There is no ambiguity.”

Newsom maintains that he has never thought about the presidency.

“No. I’m not that guy. I’m not,” he said when asked by Dana Bash if he thought he would make a good commander-in-chief.

The Golden State governor sparked speculation about his own White House ambitions earlier this year after appearing for an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity and challenging Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to debate their state’s differing policies.

Newsom, 55, also said Monday that he believes Harris, 58, is “absolutely” the best person to be Biden’s running mate in 2024.

“Of course he is,” he said. “The Biden-Harris administration, a master class in terms of performance. A bipartisan deal on infrastructure, a bipartisan deal on guns and the debt ceiling, on CHIPS and the Science Act.”

“I mean, by definition, if I think this administration, two, two and a half years ago, was one of the most outstanding administrations in the last few decades, and he’s a member of that administration, he can lay down and claim credit. to that much success. The answer is absolute,” he said.

Newsom argued that Democrats need to “instead of looking at the center like this about Joe Biden, and let’s go.”

“Let’s get on the train. This train has left the proverbial station,” he said.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dodged a question from the same network last week when asked whether the historically unpopular Harris was the best person for Biden, 80, to have on the ticket in 2024.

“He [Biden] think so,” Pelosi told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “And that’s what matters.”
