Nick Cannon Shares Why He Refused Chemotherapy For His Late Son Zen

Actor and comedian, Nick Cannon, has explained why he decided not to submit his late son to chemotherapy. The little boy named Zen died five months after his birth from an aggressive brain cancer known as Glioma.

Cannon has now shared that he and the child’s mother, Alyssa Scott chose not to undergo chemo because it did not guarantee their child would live long.

She also shared that the choice would give their son a poor quality of life as he was expected to stay in the hospital.

The comedian revealed that the last days of his son’s life were “tough,” but luckily, he had the support of his son’s mother. The couple is currently expecting their second child.

Cannon opened up about why he and Zen’s mother, Scott, chose not to put him through chemotherapy after he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.

Speaking on “The Checkup with Dr. David Agus,” the former “America’s Got Talent” host revealed that they made the decision based on the “quality of life” they want their son to have as he battles the effects of the debilitating condition. .

Cannon also revealed that following the radiation process will not keep their late son alive in the long run.

“They pretty much told me that best case scenario, your child could live up to 3 or 4 years,” the 42-year-old recalled of his conversation with his son’s team of doctors, where he was advised of chemotherapy options, per Many people.

She added, “So immediately when I heard that, I thought, quality of life. I want her to have the best existence she can have.”

Elaborating further, Cannon shared that his own experience treating lupus with several forms of chemo played a role in the decision.

“I can’t imagine him having to go through chemo,” Cannon said. “I know how as a grown man, that process … my hair falls out.”

The TV host continued, “I wouldn’t call it sick; it just sucks everything out of you. I can’t imagine that in a newborn baby and what he’s going to do.”

If Cannon and Scott accept their doctor’s offer to put their son through chemo, it implies that the hospital will be Zen’s new home, which neither of them likes.

Instead, they want a scenario where they can “enjoy” him and vice versa as he lives out his last days on earth.

Although Cannon had more time to create memories, facing Zen’s final days was “difficult” because he knew his son’s death was getting closer every second.

She was fortunate to have Scott’s support, and they were both able to overcome the emotional stress of watching their son’s gradual journey to the other side.

“I definitely couldn’t have done it without him. The fact that he was his person, from every aspect, he handled it,” said various hyphens, recalling how Scott’s “strength” and “resilience” anchored them.

He added, “We had some wonderful moments. We have a chance, we know the transition is coming. It happened faster than we thought…. Death of Zen

A few months after Zen’s birth, he was diagnosed with an uncommon and deadly brain cancer known as a high-grade Glioma.

This happened when Cannon and Scott took him to the hospital under the impression that he had Asthma, only to find out that the doctors had noticed something wrong due to their son’s unusually large head.

Zen eventually passed away in December 2021 despite undergoing several shunt treatments to relieve fluid build-up in his brain.
