A visibly angry Nikki Haley mocked Vivek Ramaswamy as “garbage” during a heated exchange at the third Republican presidential primary debate Wednesday night after the biotech entrepreneur called out the former ambassador to the United Nations’ adult daughter to comment on the social media platform TikTok.
Haley has previously mocked Ramswamy’s defense of his prolific use of the app, which some Republican lawmakers have alleged is a tool used by the Chinese Communist Party to spy on Americans.
In the second debate on September 27, Haley told the political newcomer that “TikTok is one of the most dangerous social media apps we can have. And … to be honest, every time I listen to you, I feel a little stupid for what you say.”
When asked Wednesday by conservative radio talk show host and debate moderator Hugh Hewitt how he could ban Chinese-owned apps given his own use on the campaign trail, Ramaswamy went after Haley.
“In the past debate, [Haley] made fun of me for actually joining TikTok when her own daughter actually used the app for a long time. So you might want to take care of your family first,” said Ramaswamy.
“Leave my daughter out of your voice,” Haley responded in response, which drew huge cheers from the crowd at Miami’s Arsht Center, as well as some jeers from Ramaswamy.

“You have his supporters behind him, that’s fine,” the 38-year-old said as he tried to continue his answer.
“You’re just trash,” interrupted Haley under Ramaswamy’s words..
Ramaswamy went on to argue that the country must “go further” than just banning TikTok.

“We need to ban any US company that actually transfers US data to the Chinese,” he said, before taking one last dig at Haley.
“Now it is popular to talk tough about China. When he was UN Ambassador, he called them, literally his words not mine, ‘Our good friends.’ You can’t be a fair weather fan with the right policies.”
Haley explained that she made the remarks during a period of intense negotiations between the US, China and Russia to impose “the largest set of sanctions against North Korea in a generation.”

“You,” he told Ramaswamy, “will never be able to complete the negotiations.”
The former South Carolina governor and her husband Michael have two grown children, daughter Rena and son Nalin.
