Nikki Haley wears GOP onslaught as badge of honor : ‘These guys know that we’re surging’

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said the increase in political attacks from her rivals was a sign that her campaign was “on the rise”.

In recent weeks, Republican presidential contenders such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and former President Donald Trump have stepped up their accusations against the former South Carolina governor.

“Look, all these guys know that we’re surging in the polls so they all start hitting,” Haley told Fox News’ “The Story” on Friday.

Trump has begun mocking him as “bird brain” in recent months and at one point, his campaign even sent a birdcage to his hotel room in Iowa in October.

The 77-year-old former president unloaded on Haley following the kind words she received from JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and the support of the Koch network’s Americans for Prosperity Action.

“That nickname, he lost it, it’s not a funny nickname. I don’t think it’s that great,” Haley said.

“But you see everything he said, he knew how strong I was when I came to China. I’m actually tougher on China than he is.”

Haley served as Trump’s US ambassador to the UN from 2017 to 2018. She argued that her policy on China would be more thorough than that of her old boss.

“He’s just handling the Chinese trade side, but he’s not doing anything about the fentanyl flow, he’s not doing anything about them stealing intellectual property, he’s not doing anything about them buying US land, he’s not doing anything to defeat all the intrusions that happened in our university from the police station to the creation of a spy center off the coast of Cuba,” he said.

“We have to deal with all of that because he doesn’t deal with anything.”

Trump has a solid lead in the 2024 GOP primary, averaging 62% support nationally, followed by DeSantis at 13.6% and Haley at 9.6%, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate.

The GOP frontrunner also leads in all reliable polls in early states. Haley’s campaign has outlined her second berths in New Hampshire and South Carolina which come immediately after the Iowa Caucuses on January 15, 2024.

When asked if she wanted DeSantis out, Haley said, “I’m not going to tell a candidate to get out of the race.”

“That’s their decision. It’s up to Ron. But I think you can see where we are now,” he continued.

“We’re going to keep working hard, we’re going to keep staying focused, and we’re going to get it done at the end of the day.”

Last week, Haley’s campaign announced a $10 million ad buy in New Hampshire and Iowa. He also touted 70 endorsements in Iowa.

Meanwhile, DeSantis bragged about completing a “Full Grass” barnstorming of all 99 counties in the Hawkeye State, as Republican Sen. Charles Grassley is known to do every year.

He typically polls second behind Trump and has garnered coveted endorsements from Gov. Kim Reynolds and evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats, among others.

“We will win the caucus. We do everything we need to do. We will continue to build support,” he told “Meet the Press” in an interview broadcast Sunday.

Haley and DeSantis will square off at the fourth GOP debate in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Wednesday.

Trump, who faces 91 federal and state felonies, is set to once again skip the debate.
