Norman Reedus opened up about the “very serious” and “scary” injuries he sustained while filming “The Walking Dead” series finale in March. Reedus, 53, is not new to injuries and has had near-death experiences before but said this head injury was extremely traumatic. “I’ve been hit in the face and head a million times,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve been through the car window, but that one rang my bell.”

Reedus Had A Near-Death Experience In 2005
The actor has been through his share of injuries. In 2005 when he was leaving an REM concert at the Berlin Film Festival, he was involved in a very serious car accident. “We drove a few feet and just — BLOOSH! — an 18-wheeler passed us,” Reedus told EW in 2013. “I went out the window onto the street unconscious. Woke up upside down with this big German woman wiping the glass out of my face.” Multiple operations are required and Reedus doesn’t think he’ll ever act again. “My whole head is like a hamburger,” he said. “It was just stubborn. I thought, ‘I’m not going to be an actor anymore. This is over.'” This was when he was starting out in the acting industry. It took four months to recover, and he was then able to get back in front of the camera.

Statements Released at the Time of Injury Don’t Tell the Whole Story
At the time of Reedus’ head injury on March 11, reports didn’t make it too serious, but Reedus has now revealed that it was much worse. The original statement from the actor’s publicist read, “Norman suffered a concussion on set. He is recovering and will be back at work soon. Thanks to everyone for their concern.” Reedus has now opened up, saying, “The whole ordeal for me personally was terrifying. I thought I was going to die,” he said.
Reedus had to go through various tests and precautions after the injury. “I had a neurologist. I had all kinds of s—. I failed a mild test,” he said. “I had a security guard in the entryway, just in case. I was holding on to the wall walking through the room. It was crazy.”

To make things even more difficult, not only was Reedus worried about his own health, but he was also stressed about how his absence from the set was affecting the production. “You’ve been filming for over a year, and now we’ve had to delay some filming because I’m lying in bed,” he said. “So the guilt of me not being at work and people being like, ‘Are we going to go another week? Are we going to go two weeks?’ – that bothers me.”

An Emotional Post After The Last Day Of Filming
Reedus recently discussed his emotions about the last day of filming on the show he’s been running for 12 years with PEOPLE. “There were a lot of tears and a lot of speeches. They handed me the microphone first, and I was like, ‘Uh oh,’ because I was nervous. It was very emotional,” she said. “I think what I miss the most is the people, not just the cast, but the crew. You become very close to the crew after that. We’ve become good friends and a lot of us are still in touch.”
The final eight episodes of “The Walking Dead” air starting Sunday, October 2 at 9pm ET on AMC. The series finale will air on November 20.
