If you are a frequent Gmail user, you should be aware of how annoying it is when you don’t receive Gmail verification codes even after you hit the ‘Resend Code’ button. This is one of the common issues reported by most of the Gmail users when logging into their account or resetting their password.
Gmail verification codes are needed in different situations, such as:
- When you have activated two-step verification and use a new or unrecognized device to sign in to your Gmail account.
- When you want to recover your Gmail account by resetting the password:
Case 1 If you do not receive the Gmail two-step verification code
A two-step verification code is required when you have enabled this security feature for your Gmail account and are trying to sign in to your account from a new device; as a security measure, it asks you to enter a code that Google sends to your phone number in addition to your password. To learn more about Gmail 2-Step Verification, read this blog: All About Gmail 2-Step Verification.
Here are the scenarios you might be facing: You’ve turned on 2-Step Verification for your Gmail account with your existing phone number, and now you’ve changed your mobile device and phone number. And now when you tried to log in to your Gmail account, it asks you for a verification code that was sent to your phone number. But she can’t provide them with a code, since the phone number she used for 2-Step Verification no longer exists. Or The other scenario is when you have access to your phone number, but you don’t receive any Gmail codes while you sign in to your account on a new device. |
Depending on your circumstances, you get several options from Gmail to recover your account, as follows:
A two-step verification code is required when you sign in to your Gmail account on a new/recognized device that you’ve never used before.
Additionally, if you checked the box next to “Don’t ask me again on this computer” on a device, you will be allowed to sign in from that device without a second verification step.
So, if you don’t receive a verification code from Google via text message, if possible, use a device that Google recognizes and you won’t be prompted to enter any code (only password will work). Once you manage to get into your account, don’t forget to disable two-step verification to avoid getting into this trouble again.
If you’ve only lost your phone and still have your number, you can ask your carrier to transfer your phone number to a new phone or SIM card. In this way, you can receive the verification code on your phone number from Google to get back to your Gmail account.
If you’ve lost your primary phone number and can’t enter your two-step verification code, here are some options available to you based on the information you’ve provided to Google:
- If you have another device or phone where you’re already signed in to your Gmail account, you can use it to turn off 2-Step Verification and then sign in to your account on the new device.
- If you have added another phone number in the two-step verification section of your Gmail account, you can use it for verification.
- If you’ve previously saved backup codes, you can sign in with that instead of Google’s two-step verification code. If you’ve lost your phone number or aren’t receiving verification code texts from Google via text, voice call, or Google Authenticator, you can use backup codes to sign in. - You can also use a security key for two-step verification. For more information, please read this: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6103523
I investigated other reasons why there is a delay in receiving the verification code or why users do not receive any codes from Gmail. This is what I found out from the official sources:
- Make sure you have a working internet connection if you are trying to get your codes.
- If you’re expecting a text message with a verification code on your phone, make sure your mobile device and service plan support text message delivery. Also, delivery speed may vary depending on location and service provider.
- If Google notices any changes to how you sign in, your location, you may not receive a verification code in that case.
- Sometimes you may also receive a notice from Google instead of text message verification codes. In the case of a Google message, you must tap a notification on your phone to confirm that you are the one trying to sign in; in that situation, you will not be asked to enter any code. You can receive notices from Google on any Android phone where you’re signed in to your Gmail account.
You can always try again later if you don’t get any code from Google, even after doing everything correctly. As sometimes Gmail is facing outage and the servers are down, hence you are not receiving any verification code text on your Android or iPhone device.

Case 2 If you do not receive the verification code from Gmail to reset your password
If you’re trying to reset your Gmail account password and you don’t receive the code, this could be another scenario. When you click ‘Forgot Password’, you are basically given the following password reset options based on the information you provided to Gmail when setting up your account:
- To enter the code that was sent to you by text message or call your phone number.
- To enter the code that was sent to your alternate email address.
- Please answer the security question you created when you first created your Gmail account.
- Receive a prompt from Google that requires you to tap a key you receive on your mobile device.
You can use any of these to recover your Gmail account in case you are not receiving verification codes.
The first thing to make sure is that you’re getting good signal strength if you’re expecting a verification code to your alternate email address via email.
In case you have opted to receive text or call verification on your mobile phone, please check if your mobile device is receiving the required network strength to receive calls and text messages.
If you don’t receive a code on your mobile phone number via text or call, you can select the ‘Try another way’ option and then select your email address to complete verification or vice versa. Similarly, if you’ve added a security question to your Gmail account, answer it and reset your password instead of waiting for recovery codes.
You may not receive Gmail codes if the servers are down. Check if Gmail is experiencing an outage, as that could be one of the reasons why you’re not receiving any verification codes from Google either on your phone or in your email address. If your Internet is working fine and you have provided the correct information, it means that Gmail has some problems. If that’s the case, you can wait for a while and try again later.
Similarly, if you don’t get Gmail codes at other times, you can try following all the tips provided in this guide. Hopefully, all of these tips will help you fix the issues for which you are not receiving any verification codes from Gmail.
