November migrant encounters on US-Mexico border breaks record — with nearly 250K trying to cross

Nearly a quarter of a million migrants tried to cross America’s beleaguered South border in November — the highest November total and the third highest monthly total on record.

There were 242,418 encounters last month, according to the latest figures released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Friday. It is

November’s total has only been eclipsed twice before — in September when 269,735 migrants were found and in December 2022 when 252,315 migrants were found.

The shocking numbers were released just days before Christmas, prompting House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) to declare that the Biden administration “wants a small number of Americans to see them.”

“By strategically holding the release of these numbers until the Friday before Christmas, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas unabashedly demonstrated the full extent of his dishonesty,” Green said in a statement.

Green said he expects more records to be trampled in the coming weeks, calling Mayorkas’ handling of the crisis “cowardly.”

“The December numbers, which will be released in January, are expected to be more gloomy,” he said. “Fortunately, next month the Secretary will not have a big holiday as an easy shield to hide.”

A surge in new arrivals could occur in the coming months as border crossers rush to reach the US before the new Texas law takes effect in March.

Signed by Gov. Greg Abbott Monday, the law gives law enforcement officials in the state the power to arrest anyone suspected of entering the country illegally.

“This cowardly quest to avoid accountability and transparency is the further reason my Committee started impeachment proceedings against Secretary Mayorkas at the beginning of the new year,” asserted Green.

“This disaster that destroyed our country will not be accepted anymore.”

In fiscal year 2023, more encounters were recorded at the southern border than in any other year since the government began collecting such records in 1960 — with an estimated total of 2.4 million.

The ongoing crackdown is shattering previous highs almost daily, as bewildered border agents try to stem entry in places like Eagle Pass, Texas.

Officials said there were 12,600 encounters on the southern border on Monday alone – a new daily record.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tried to play down the numbers this week, telling reporters that the situation was not unusual.

“What we see here at the border, the increase in migration flows, of course, it ebbs and flows,” he said. “And we’re at a time of year where we’re seeing more at the border. And it is not unusual. This is an immigration system that has been broken for decades.”

But National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd told Fox News on Friday that his members are growing frustrated with their orders.

“While our agents are more than willing to sacrifice their days off to protect their fellow Americans, that’s not what they’re going to do,” he said.

“They will process illegal crossings to be released to the US while most of the border will be left wide open to be exploited by organized crime. This is not a happy holiday for the hard working men and women of the Border Patrol.”
