New York was one of eight states that lost population over the past year with nearly 102,000 residents – the most in the country – fleeing the Empire State, new data found.
While Democratic-controlled New York and California saw significant declines in population from July 2022 to July 2023, Republican-led states such as Texas and Florida posted significant net increases in people moving, the US Census Bureau said on Tuesday.
New York’s population was about 19.57 million on July 1 after about 19.67 million just 12 months ago — the biggest drop of any state in the country, census data show.
That equates to a change of about 0.5 year over year for the fourth most populous state in the US.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in the spring of 2020, New York’s population has decreased by 631,000 people, Census figures show.
“For decades, more people have left New York in greater numbers than arrived. That’s nothing new,” researcher Jan Vink, who works in Cornell’s applied demography program, told Newsday Tuesday.
He said the number of people packing their suitcases used to be offset by a natural increase, but that increase is also declining.

California lost the next largest share of population with a net decrease of nearly 75,500, according to the federal agency.
The Golden State still leads the nation in population following the decline.
The Northeast – which was found to have the safest cities and towns in the country – was the only region to lose population over the last year, according to the census report.

The states that received the most people were Texas and Florida, adding 473,453 and 365,205, respectively. North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina round out the other top five states for population gain.
New Jersey was one of 11 states that saw population growth after dealing with a decline a year ago. It drew about 30,000 people — most from 11 states to reverse its population trajectory.
Overall, the US grew by 1.6 million over the last year, the Census Bureau said. While still historically low, it was better than the previous two years.

“US immigration is returning to pre-pandemic levels and declining deaths are driving national growth,” Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Population Division at the Census Bureau, said in a statement.
“Although births declined, this was offset by a nearly 9% decline in deaths. Ultimately, fewer deaths coupled with rebounding immigration led the country to experience its largest population increase since 2018.”
