A prestigious Big Apple law firm has rescinded job offers to three students at Harvard and Columbia universities after the Ivy League students signed a controversial letter supporting Palestinians in the wake of Hamas’ deadly slaughter in Israel.
Davis Polk & Wardwell notified staff on Tuesday that it had canceled the offer because the prospective employee held a leadership position in a student organization that issued a statement last week blaming Israel for the attack.
“This statement is simply contrary to our firm’s values and therefore we have concluded that canceling this offer is appropriate in upholding our responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all Davis Polk employees,” Davis Polk managing partner Neil Barr said in a statement. email.
A spokesman for the firm declined to identify the student.
Two of the Columbia students held leadership roles in the group that signed the letter issued by the Ivy League’s Palestine Solidarity Group, the New York Times reported.

Another student is a member of the Harvard Palestine Solidarity Group, which issued a letter stating that Israel is “fully responsible” for the mass slaughter of Hamas.
The firm, which represents financial institutions and companies, said it was still “in dialogue” with the two students on Tuesday after they argued that they had not given their consent or signed the letter individually.

Davis Polk’s decision comes a week after another law firm, Winston & Strawn, said it had rescinded a job offer to former New York University Bar Association president Ryna Workman following a controversial pro-Hamas column that encouraged Hamas attacks.

The firm said the former summer associate’s comments were “deeply at odds with Winston & Strawn’s values as a firm.”
“Winston stands in solidarity with Israel’s right to exist in peace and condemns Hamas and the violence and destruction it has unleashed in the strongest possible terms,” the firm’s statement said.
NYU law dean Troy McKenzie sought to distance the school from Workman’s comments last week, saying the student’s message was not from the school and did not speak for its leadership.

Workman, who identifies as non-binary, doubled down on the inflammatory rhetoric, telling the Intercept on Tuesday that they would “continue to speak out and show up.”
“What drives me is the resilience of the Palestinian people right now,” Workman told the media in their first media interview since the scandal.

The move from the law firm comes after Bill Ackman, the billionaire founder of hedge fund giant Pershing Square Capital Management, vowed to ensure that any student who signed the controversial Ivy League letter would not work on Wall Street.
At least a dozen business executives later backed Ackman’s call to refuse to hire student group members.
