He attended Eneka Government Secondary School in Obiakpor, Rivers State, and gave his O’level examination before going further to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology. Nyesom completed his education at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology with a Bachelor of Laws degree. After that, he began his Master of Arts degree in Political and Administrative Studies. He is also a member of the People’s Democratic Party.
He served as the Executive Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area for 2 terms from 1999 to 2007. He became the Minister of Education on July 14, 2011. When Mrs. Ruqqayatu was dismissed for some reason, Nyesom Wike became the acting minister of education.

Nyesom Wike made a statement that he will run for the presidency of Nigeria under the PDP platform in March 2022 ahead of the 2023 General elections.
Wike was defeated by Atiku Abubakar who got the primary vote with 371 votes and won while he got 237 votes and became the first runner up when the Peoples Democratic Party presidential election held at the MKO ABIOLA National Stadium, Abuja on 28 and 29 May 2022.
INEC declared him the winner of the Rivers State governorship election on April 3, 2019, when the entire process was suspended for several days. He was sworn in on May 29, 2019, at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Hartcourt as Wike began his 2nd term.
