An NYPD captain who was previously sued by a female subordinate over allegations of sexual harassment has been accused of beating and kidnapping a date, authorities said.
New York City Police Capt. Hariton Marachilian, 45, was arrested on Dec. 1 following an investigation into a domestic violence incident in Paterson, NJ, on Dec. 19, 2022, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Marachilian is accused of kidnapping and assaulting an unidentified woman, who was seriously injured in the attack after the pair went to a restaurant with friends, officials said.
The cop allegedly choked the woman, left “visible marks” on her neck, and repeatedly slammed her head into the dashboard of her car and punched her in the face, according to the criminal complaint.
The assault continued for “hours” inside and outside the vehicle, the woman said in the complaint.
He said he was able to escape the vehicle at one point but police chased him, “lifting him over his head and throwing him to the ground,” the document said.

During the alleged beating, the woman suffered facial injuries, including cuts to her eyes and bleeding from her nose, according to the complaint, which added that Marachilian took her phone to prevent her from calling for help but she pleaded with passersby. -by to call the police.
The woman allegedly later told Paterson police that she did not want medical help and referred to Marachilian as a “friend.”
Marachilian said they had an “affair” and only had a “‘verbal dispute’ and wanted to go home to their significant other,” according to the document.

He was charged with first-degree kidnapping, two counts of second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree criminal restraint and third-degree criminal coercion.
The suspect tried to turn in his retirement papers at NYPD headquarters after the incident, but officers found a warrant for his arrest, and his retirement has been put on hold until the case is played out, sources told The Post. He was suspended without pay.
During the court hearing, Marachilian’s attorney, Joshua Stevens, told the judge that his client is a father of two and a “decorated 19-year veteran of the New York Police Department. He is an Iraq war veteran.”
He faces charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree criminal restraint and third-degree criminal coercion.
The attorney said Marachilian suffers from PTSD.

In 2020, an NYPD narcotics captain alleged that Marachilian repeatedly harassed him with questions about his sex life — and that he was targeted with an Internal Affairs investigation after complaining about it.
Sharon Carolyn Balli, Guyanese’s first ever Indian woman to be a retired army captain and major, also alleged in the document that Marachilian tried to enter their shared executive bathroom on “several occasions [sic] from December 2019 to June 2020 while [she was] shower.”
Balli, who was seeking $5 million, settled with the city for $800,000, according to the New York Daily News.
