Ohio couple with same birthday give birth to twins — on their birthday

There is no excuse for a late birthday with this family..

An Ohio couple with the same birthday got a once in a blue moon gift on their special day this year – a set of newborn twins.

Scierra Blair, 31, and José Ervin, 32 – who both celebrate August 18 birthdays – welcomed a son and a daughter just five minutes after midnight more than a week ago at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital – on August 18.

“It’s a blessing,” Ervin told PEOPLE. “Best birthday present ever.”

The chance of a baby sharing a birthday with both parents is extremely rare — about 1 in every 133,000 births, Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children estimated when a similar birth occurred last year.

Coupled with the rate of twin births — about 31 out of every 1,000 successful births — couples have a better chance of being struck by lightning than giving birth to a newborn on their own birthday.

Extraordinary events almost never happen. Ervin had to convince his fiancée to endure a few extra hours of discomfort to reach her due date.

The baby’s due date was initially expected on August 28. But when the couple went for a check-up on August 17, doctors discovered one of the babies was in a feet-down position in the womb – and advised a caesarean section that day to avoid complications.

It was about 4:30 p.m., and Ervin said he realized if they had lasted just a few more hours, the whole family would have shared the same birthday.

Since Blair and the babies are fine and the doctor says it’s okay to wait if they want, Ervin tries to convince his tired and hungry fiancee to hang on.

“Since he was in good health and not stressed, and the kids were in good health and not stressed, I thought, ‘Why not wait?'” he said.

“I said our children were born on our birthdays, that’s unique. We all celebrated together, it was wonderful.”

“I was hungry and just wanted it to be over,” Blair recounted.

“He said, ‘It’s only a few hours and it will go by quickly.’ And I just looked at him and said, ‘Easy for you to say. I am hungry.'”

Ervin eventually won over Blair, but not without compromise.

“I agreed, but I told them they owed me a week’s worth of potato salad,” Blair said.

Shortly after the calendar turned to August 18, doctors delivered José Ervin III. Ar’ria Lannette Ervin was born a minute later.

“It’s my birthday present and I’m happy with that,” Ervin told PEOPLE. “I am very excited. I kiss them like 30,000 times a day.”
