Ohio woman sells home to fund 3-year luxury cruise, only for company to cancel trip

There is no ticket to heaven.

An Ohio woman sold her home to experience the trip of a lifetime on a $32,000 luxury cruise that would take her around the world — only for it to never happen.

Keri Witman, head of marketing agency Clever Lucy, said things took a turn for the worse after Life at Sea Cruises on Nov. 17 told her they had to cancel the trip because they couldn’t get a ship for the cruise.

“I’ve been working for the last eight months to really get everything in line, my life in order, so I can do it,” Witman told The Enquirer. “It’s really disappointing to know it won’t be for nothing.”

The dream luxury cruise offers travelers to stay on board for three years while the ship stops in 148 countries and visits 382 ports on every continent.

The Life at Sea Cruise, scheduled to depart from Istanbul, advertises they will provide meals, travel, internet access, medical care and more for prices starting at $30,000 per year per guest, the cruise’s website said.

Witman told the outlet that he wanted to make the trip because it would give him the opportunity, as a mostly remote worker, to travel around the world while still being able to run his company.

Witman sold her home and signed a short-term lease on an apartment to reserve her room, which costs $38,500, according to the outlet.

“I called everybody, I kept expecting someone to tell me that (this is a bad idea) and I called my financial investment people, and they were like, ‘You should do it,'” Witman recalled. “Like, this guy is the most conservative financial person, I can’t believe they told me I should do it.”

Problems arose when the Life at Sea Cruise, which was originally scheduled to depart on November 1, informed passengers that they had to push back the departure date several times.

The cruise line has plans to buy Carnival Corp.’s ships. named AIDAaura, but another company has acquired the ship.

Witman was terrified and didn’t know what to make of the several pushbacks when the cruise line would finally take off.

“It’s just in a place where you don’t want to plan anything ahead,” Witman said. “When I found out it was a question, I was like, ‘Do I make (dinner) reservations for January?’”

Life at Sea Cruise announced it is offering refunds to all passengers from Dec. 1 to February 2024 in monthly installments, an Instagram post from Miraycruises announced in Turkish.

Other customers were furious at the sudden cancellation from the luxury cruise line, as some claimed to be homeless because of it.

“There are a lot of people right now who have nowhere to go, and some need their refunds to plan somewhere to go — it’s not good right now,” one passenger told CNN.

“I am very sad, angry and lost,” said another passenger. “I have the next three years of my life planned to live an extraordinary life, and now [I have] nothing. I had a hard time moving forward.”
